Hip Hop in a Kilt?
Yesterday (October 23rd), my kids went to see Macklemore and Ryan Lewis at the Spokane Arena. Sold-out show of a very popular hip hop duo. The kids didn't get in until after I had gone to bed, so I checked the local newspaper's online version for a review this morning. Macklemore is known for eclectic wardrobe and last night, as far as I can tell from the pictures, he performed kilted! Now I see that he also had jeans on under the kilt and an untucked Seattle Sonics basketball throwback jersey, but the kilt seems to have the pleaty bits in back and is worn at the proper height at the knees--no sagging here. Check this photo essay from the local newspaper:

Looks like it was a fun, sold-out show. In the comments section, it says that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis gave away a bunch of tickets to underpriveleged kids to see the show. Good for them.

It appears that the fringed apron of his kilt is on the left... Very odd.

Considering one of their big hits is Thrift Shop and how much we scour those for good deals on things to make kilty I'd say he fits right in with the kilted world. My son is always singing the chorus to that song lol...
When I saw John Paul Jones on tour supporting his album, Zooma, one of his bandmates (Nick Beggs on Chapman Stick) was kilted. I wasn't at this performance but he wore the same thing at the one I was at:
One of the best live shows I've ever seen.

I <3 Macklemore and completely approve of his kilt! The trousers underneath just gotta go, however. He's missing out on the best part with those things on.

At the JPJ show I was right up against the stage for the entire gig but I had the courtesy not to check how authentic Nick was wearing his kilt. When I get home I'll ask my wife if she was similarly inclined.
I wonder if Mr. Macklemore has ever explained why he wears his that way? Not that it's any of my business - just curious is all.

With his big hit "Thrift Store," Macklemore often goes for what can charitably be called an 'eclectic' look. My son says he runs and jumps around the stage so much, maybe he is simply trying to maintain a little plausible decorum. In my original post, I mentioned he gave out some free tickets to some kids. Turns out they were to teens going through a local program for drug and alcohol rehab. Macklemore often talks about his problems with drugs & alcohol, his rehab and continuing sobriety. I guess he is trying to spread the word and give some kids an extra hand. I give that an 'Aye" and thumbs up.
