    Kilted cover German magazine

Just stumbled across this 1990s magazine cover

(Be cool in the Kilt/ Prince Charles as landscape painter)

It's got all the classic goofy things like Ghillies laced uber-high, Day sporran, white hose, and ordinary Ghillies worn with Evening Dress jacket, etc.

Seems like no matter what (Rob Roy, Braveheart, romance novel cover, whatever) they always want something wrapped around one shoulder. In this case, I don't know what that red thing is.

And it looks like an ordinary belt, maybe a US Western belt, serving as a sword belt/crossbelt.

I just love how excited the model looks to be wearing it

It is funny how strongly imprinted this mixed-up ensemble is on the minds of so many who don't wear the kilt.

I would suggest where it should be, but it would be un-priestly.

It looks to me like it's not even a claymore, but a rapier.

If you search for highland attire then most of the results show inaccurate attire. The most common is the white socks. There really is no traditional place for such, diced or tartan hose being the preferred in every instance.

I think the photo is doctored in that the rocks he's standing on are not there near Eilean Donan at that place. He looks to be holding a sword scabbard in his left hand but the lower part has possibly been cropped out. It's certainly a baskethilt he's holding, you can see the lugs at the base of the blade which itself is edge on hence the narrow look of the blade.

As for the sash, it looks a little like the sashes worn by some women for Scottish country dancing, though it is basically a version of the cumberband as used here, earlier forms of highland attire made much use of such decoration. The only thing he's missing is the huge brooch. Overall though I feel this is a formal look with the main issue being the socks, but as this is civilian wear, there should be latitude for personal taste.

Personally I'm not a fan of black jackets with kilts, the original culture was colourful and black is anti-colour.
