Kilts on TV last night
Samuel Jackson wearing a kilt in the British film "51st State" on channel 4 wore it all the way through the film, and Griff Rhys Jones documentary about mountains in Britain went to Isle of Skye and was talking to Clan Chief John McCloud who was wearing a kilt but had a upper class English accent, he was selling part of his land to pay for maintenance on his castle which was gonna cost 9million its a shame to let good castles like that go into disrepair should of got lottery funding.it said John McCloud had recently passed away

It was an interesting programme and I worked out it must have been made before John McCleod died in February - there is often a long lead time between something being made and it being broadcast.
But his was the only kilt I saw - I was sad to see a celidh in Portree without any kilts to be seen.

It surprised me too, thought Griff might have worn one once he came down from the mountains, but the gaelic(irish) or garlic(scottish) as they called it was still going strong

Chief John who dearly loved Dunvegan and the Cuillan (sp) Range, wanted the sale of one treasure to finance the repair of another. He saw it is a win win for the MacLeods and the surrounding area. It seems as is son Hugh will be keeping his fathers wishes.
Dunvegan is, I believe, one of the oldest continually inhabited (by the same family) castles in Scotland (and maybe the UK, please correct me if I am wrong). It is a beautiful place.

Yeah, that's a rule I use: if they're talking, it was done before they died. It's hard to get the talking bit once they're dead.
Sorry, that's one of those English language colloquialisms that always catch me.

Sad but true, most of the locals can't afford kilts unlike the laird. He never did get a buyer for (his?) mountains though. It's an interesting fact that most of these upper class twits do speak like jorries (translation:Scots for someone who speaks like they have a mouthful of marbles). Something to do with being sent to an English boarding school to be with the "right sort of people" I suppose.

Chief John did not come across as an "upper class twit" in my view Phil but yes you do not find many Chiefs with a Scottish accent.

No i didn't think he was an upper class twit either its just that he spoke rather well, in my eyes his heart was in the right place, so i hope his son does the right thing by him and keeps the castle going in a beautiful part of the world, he should try and get on theat tv programme where if they win they get a grant to fix the problems, can't remember name of it though, the public vote for which building they want money spending on.

I cringed when I heard how much it would cost to fully restore Dunvegan - millions!
