Kilts Are Twice as Well Known Now Since 1980

I caught this while on cnn.com today. Apparently, in questionnaires given annually since 1980, the garment called the kilt is twice as likely to be correctly identified today than in 1980:

Other than the goofy photo, that's good news, right?

I fail to see what is goofy about the photo but certainly it is good news.

Is that Turnbull and MacDonald tartans? I'm not familiar with the grey and black one. But it may have something to do with the movies and shows of Mrs. Brown, Monarch of the Glen, and (shudder) Bravehart being out since then and thus increasing kilt awareness.

Yes, I do believe that is Turnbull (on the right). Sure looks a lot like my Turnbull hunting kilt.
