    Monarch is back

I'm happy to say that Monarch of the Glen series 5 is to start on telly this saturday night.

I'm looking forward to seeing Duncan running around in his kilt again. He was an early influence on me to be wearing the kilt myself.

    Graham,

I'm so glad that someone else here loves "Monarch." I only started watching it a few months ago (and have been forced to miss it the last month.)

I wish that I could have started with Series 1 here in the USA, but I thought it was only on BBCAmerica, and then found it on my Public Broadcasting station. I didn't find it until the beginning of series 2. (Sorry, American broadcasting is confusing.)

Here's a question. How come the other MacDonalds wear kilts at the major social events (Such as the ball where they got Glenbogle back), but Archie always wears those wretched trews? Yuck!

I love the fact that Duncan wears a kilt all the time. He's been an influence on me wanting a kilt too, even if he is a bit of a wally.

    Rufus,

I have been a fan of "Monarch" since the very first episode, about four years ago. All of the four/five series are available on Video and DVD here in the United Kingdom, so I guess they must be in the USA also.

Two years ago, I met Hamish Clark, who plays Duncan, and he told me that the cast members get to choose their own costumes for the programme although the Producer has the final "say". It appears that Alastair Mackenzie (Archie) just does not like wearing the kilt so was permitted Trews. I do remember him wearing the kilt in a couple of the early episodes, however - and very handsome he was too!

    TREWS????

Trews a preference above kilts for a Mackenzie, then I say a pox on trews and all who wear them, but then the McLarens have always said the Mackenzies were girls . Anyone feel like starting a feud

    Hamish,

Yeah, I found that Series 1 and 2 are available on DVD, and I can get them in the States from amazon.com for $55. However, they've only converted up to series 2 so far. Converting TV shows from Europe TV(PAL) to North America TV(NTSC) is a bit of a mess, so I should just be happy I get it at all.

That's interesting that Alastair doesn't like to wear a kilt. Oh well, to each his own. I'll have to check out Series 1 sometime, so I can see him look like a proper MacDonald.

Does anyone know the name of the tartan and maker of Duncan's kilt?

I was thinking the other day that Duncan in the series is a pioneer, I know of no other show that has promoted the kilt in the casual way Duncan does, ie, short socks, hiking boots and sweater/jumper.

Hamish, did you discuss kilts with Hamish Clarke when you met him?
Does he know what an influence he's been on others?

Rufus, series 2 on DVD will be released on May 4th

I don't know the maker, but if the picture you posted under "Does Anyone Watch Monarch of the Glen?" is the right tartan, I am going to stick with my previous notion that that is the Stewart Modern Hunting tartan.

I know this sounds lame, but I'd love to have a kilt that looks like Duncans. Yeah, I know I just said in a different thread that I thought it was plain black because of bad reception, but I think Duncan is the coolest.

Alaskan, I think you're right. It does look a lot like Stewart Modern Hunting.

Oh Rufus, that IS really lame, (but I think the same, I like the tartan)

I did see a "Monarch of the Glen" tartan listed somewhere.

Well, at least there's two of us (and I'm guessing there are others that wouldn't post this in the open forum.)

Oh Monarch, how do I love thee?
