Monarch of the Glen
When I first started lurking and reading X-Marks the Scot, Hamish posted a thread about the end of the BBC series "Monarch of the Glen". I had never heard of the show before, but the comments from everyone made it seem worth checking out. My wife and I subscribe to the Netflix DVD rental service, so I put it on our queue. Last week it finally came to the top of our list and we received the first four episodes in the mail. I would like to say that it is a completely charming (and amusing) show. It is set in Scotland and there are kilts to be seen on regular basis (one of the characters ( Duncan), seems always to be wearing one Anyone who enjoyed the old BBC comedy "Good Neighbors" will recognize Richard Briers as the crusty father, Hector. So to all of you out there who haven't heard of it before I suggest you give it a try. I'm looking forward to going through the whole series.
Quick note, I didn't put this on Hamish's original thread to give it a bump because some of the replies seemed to contain some spoilers about the show.

Panache, My wife and I just recently heard of the series and went through all the Monarch of the Glen DVDs on Netflix. We have watched many of the British shows and are quite fond of them. We agree with your assesment that Monarch of the Glen is completly charming and amusing. You are really going to enjoy them. Be sure to see them in sequence though. It was a sad day when we finished the last show and we went through withdrawls for a few weeks. We have just finished the Good Neighbors videos this week as well and are now looking forward to another series. We have seen a few other shows (Ballykissangel, Red Dwarf and the usual "BritComs" that are on PBS). Any suggestions for another series?
Cheers! Bill

Be sure to check out Black Adder. There is some funny stuff there.

Not a "Britcom" but I think Netflix also has a disc of the Hamish MacBeth mystery series.

Scottish Chi,
"Faulty Towers" I'm sure you have already seen this (Perhaps the funniest sitcom ever) but if not IMMEDIATELY GET THEE HENCE AND WATCH
The Goodies (Tim Brook-Taylor, Bill Odie, and Graeme Garden) Same era as "Monty Python" similiar bizzare humor though each episode follows just one story.
"To the Manor Born" This is a particular favorite of mine. Penelope Keith (Good Neighbor's Margot) as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton and Peter Bowles as Richard Devere. The battle between old gentility and the noveau riche
has never been funnier.
Cheers

Notable TV series from the UK...I could write a book!
They send us "Lost Empires" and we send them "Kojack".
They send us "Flickers" and we sent them "Dynasty".
Okay...maybe not a fair trade...
I SERIOUSLY recommend "Lost Empires"...not a comedy...about a nephew travelling with his decidedly not nice magician uncle in the twilight days of the music halls in England.
"Flickers"...mostly funny but serious at the core...Bob Hoskins as Arnie Cole rises from con man to movie impressario in the early days of silent film...absolutely great.
"Waiting For God"...two old people in a retirement home making life "interesting" for their relatives. "Vicar Of Dibley"...if you haven't seen it, you have missed the exploits of "The Dibley Poisoner"...if you have, you know what I mean...Dawn French is the sexiest big woman in the world. "Are You Being Served" and "A.Y.B.S Again"...I will stay up and watch episodes that I have seen twelve times already...and I am unanimous in this. "Last of the Summer Wine"...never falling down roaring laughter funny but very warm humor...watch for the constant series of explosions from Wesley's shed...this series has been running for something like thirty years and they still haven't worn the premise out.
So to our friends in the UK...we'll be sending you "My Name Is Earl"...I KNOW that you'll love that one...we'd send you "Heist" but I think that they gave up trying to make that one work after about four episodes. If you are really lucky you may get "Joey"...you loved friends, you'll love Joey...although it looks like a whole lot of people didn't. And perhaps you may get to see the American remake of "Coupling"...el stinko, as we say on this side of the pond...although that unbelievably attractive blond woman from the UK version of Coupling did show up on "Teachers" over here this year (and by the way, "Teachers" bit the moose after about a half adozen episodes...no reflections on Sarah Alexander).
TV or not TV....
But Blackadder...that's great...especially Blackadder Two....Miranda Richardson as QE I and Fry and Laurie...not to mention Tony Richardson as Baldric...even a guest shot by Tom Baker! Thank you.
Best
