If it is indeed in his lease that there will be no other Highlandwear to be sold or promoted on the site, then I say good for Mr. Nicholsby for taking them to task on the issue. It certainly beats a brawl in the street, as the Singh family have dealt with these disputes in the past.

Technically the Golds could have a valid point that by advertising on the OUTSIDE of the building they are not promoting a rival highlandwear business within it, but I'd have thought this big banner on the face of the building would look a bit of an eyesore on the historic Royal Mile.

I haven't seen the banner but clearly it's an attempt to point business in another direction.
The new landlords of the site clearly are not a disinterested party and as the landlords will try to get away with what they can in furthering their own business interests. Of course they would never have had the chance of becoming landlords if Mr Nicholsby had not sold the site on in the first place.

Well, that is why we have lawyers -- to settle disputes about contracts, whether social or commercial.

Agreed. A lawyer "should" settle this arguement, but most likely with the type of feud these two got going on, there will just be a new issue in a few months.

I tend to think that this saga will go on and on in a war of attrition.
