There was that whole Seattle/grunge thing where they wore plaid, flannel shirts wrapped around the waist as to mimic a kilt.
Why not just all the way?

Grunge shirts
I was part of that whole scene. I saw pearl jam in 1994 and more tartan than i'd ever seen in my life ! Although, i don't think the intent was to mimic a kilt. The shirts were just the fashion because that's what you could get at the thrift stores. That's what the old men were donating at the time. We took ours off and tied it around our waist because it got so hot "moshing" and "slam dancing" that we'd become soaked by the end of a concert.
