Surprise Mention of a Kiltie in a Book C. 1934
So, I'm reading a book called Dine' Tah (means Navajoland in Navajo) written by a Caucasian guy who grew up on the Navajo reservation near four corners back in the 1920s and 30s. His folks were missionaries. Its the only book I've found about Caucasians coping with Navajo culture other than Navajos Wear Nikes a book about growing up White in Ganado, AZ on the Navajo reservation in more recent times. Working for the Navajo Nation I cherish the insight and tips in these books.
To the point. I'm reading along in Dine' Tah and the author is talking about being 10 years old and taking a vacation off the rez with his parents. They went to the Chicago World's Fair then over to Detroit on church business. He talks about taking the new tunnel over to Windsor, Ontario, Canada and says, "....a big Scot came striding down the street in full kit, jacket, tartan kilt, and swinging sporran." Not something you'd normally read in a book about Navajo ways.
Nice to know guys were out and about kilted back in 1934 too.

"I'll have a kilt please, a nice hand sewn tartan, 16 ounce Strome. Oh, and a sporran on the side, with a strap please."

Well, that's Ontario Canada. It has always had a vibrant and obvious Scottish "contingent."

I can just see the bug eyed look on the 10 year old. It obviously made a big impression on him on his trip into a larger world. I really love seeing that "first look" and explaining what I am wearing to the little ones.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.
