Bastrop, Texas
There's a fair chance I might be in Bastrop Texas (wherever that is) for a night or two in mid January.
Anyone know how kilt friendly the area might be?

Well you are only 30 miles SE from downtown Austin. That area is extremely kilt friendly.

My sister used to live in Bastrop... It's a pretty rural community, and would likely be a fair bit less kilt tolerant than Austin, which is a very liberal town by Texas standards. I'm afraid you might find the locals a bit on the redneck side, but you never can tell.

Bastrop
I would not hesitate to wear a kilt in Bastrop.
If you have time, there are two wonderful state parks nearby(Bastrop and Buescher). Hiking in a kilt under the pines would be a great time.

My thoughts as well. My only kilt wearing experience there is stopping for gas while passing through kilted, and I got some ugly looks from the local Bubba-types. It is much like any other small to medium town in Texas. You'll probably get both positive and negative feedback.
Austin is a completely different scene, and things are very different once you leave the city.

Bastrop is a very cool little town. There is a large artist community there and they have quite a little theater scene. I don't think you will get the slightest bit of weirdness over the kilt. That said, Austin is full of good kilt things to do: The Dog and Duck Pub, Opal Divine's, Fado's, Bagpipes Pub, B.D. Riley's, etc. etc. You might also look into the Austin Celtic Association, the Texas Celtic Music Network, and the Texas Celtic Cultural Center.

I've been through Bastrop kilted a couple times, no problems. I know it's "in the country" but I don't really think of Bastrop as a rural community any more, it's been pretty well messed up by the yuppie overflow from Austin IMO.
Anyway, Austin is the place for a little nightlife, in addition to the places already mentioned, you might look into Coyote Ugly on 6th street, they love the kilt;
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.
