This ssems more like "off topic" than "kilt accessory" so I'm putting it here...

I was at the Art Institute of Chicago a few days ago. As I was leaving, I passed through Gunsaulus Hall where some of the objects from the Harding Collection are on view. The Harding Collection was a private collection of European Decorative Arts objects and Arms and Armour. It used to be difficult to get in to see the collection until it was "liquidated" by its trustees and ended up at the Art Institute...this actually happened twenty-odd years ago and its obvious when you go through the gallery how much people enjoy seeing all of these swords, pikes and helmets.

This time, I stopped to look at the section devoted to one handed swords...most of you would be knocked out by the two-handed sword collection - they are stunners but, unfortunately, they are off display right now while a rennovation is going on. There, in the center, was a basket hilt claymore and I took the time to really take a good look at it. Really incredible worksmanship...such nice details and very obviously made by hand and not by machines. The actual grip was listed on the description as being covered with fish skin...interesting, because I see this as a feature of Japanese swords as well...must have been the Sixteenth Century equivalent of having "stick-um" on the grip.

Just nice to see such a well made old object. Next time I'm down there, I'll have to try to photograph it...that's one of the galleries where they don't seem to mind your taking pictures. Just a reminder to stop at those museums and check out the collections.

AIC has a big Textiles Department...wonder if they have any tartan...?
