    Coin-minting contraption

One of the venders at the games had a unique coin-minting contraption that resembled the French Guillotine.

In the 1500s Queen Elizabeth wanted to standardize the coinage system throughout her land. At the time, the different shires were all making their own coins and it was difficult to keep track of real coins and counterfeit coins. She asked her coinmakers to develop a new method to make coins and make them consistent. Her coinmakers researched many different methods and found that Leonardo De Vinci had designed a machine he called "the drop-hammer mint". The coinmakers built one from his design and the modern era of coin making was born. The coinmakers were able to make coins consistently and flawlessly. They kept their new method of making coins secret for over 150 years thus eliminating the counterfeiting of coins and helped to standardize the coinage system for all of England at the time. The drop-hammer mint was the first industrialized machine of the Renaissance Period.

The mint is operated using controlled amounts of accelerated gravity by raising a 180 lb. hammer to a height of 9 feet. The coin set between the two dies are struck with an incredible 40 to 80 tons of force! The symbolic art we offer reveals only positive energies that may move and inspire you. An understanding of the profound messages conveyed by symbols may creatively enhance your journey of self-discovery.
Now you can have a fine coin or medallion made with this remarkable machine. You pick out any 2 designs you like and the coinmaker will strike you a coin or medallion in bronze, .999 fine silver or 24k gold

Those are called "drop hammers" and have been in use a very long time. Very useful technology, that is.

Nicely made simple one. I give them high marks for making do with what is available to them (what blacksmithing is really always about). Cool, thanks for sharing !
