Computer gurus...XP question
I just downloaded SP3 for my computer, I'm running XP Home. All of a sudden I can't access my "D" (CD RW) drive. It was working fine before when I only had SP1 running. Any tips??

Man you're brave, I can't use half of my proprietary software on SP2 without major hassles. So I just second party firewall it to death and forge on. I figure It's someones way of telling me it's time for a new computer. Unfortunately I have no real answers for you other than doing a search for new hardware. O'Neille

I didn't know SP3 for Windows XP had been released yet.
Are you sure you have Windows XP and not Windows 2000?
Is the SP3 a typo, did you mean SP2 for Windows XP?
DON'T PANIC!

Since you're dealing with XP Home...
click on-Start-All Programs-Accessories-System tools-System Information. You can then view the Hardware resources,Componets,Software Enviroment and Internet settings. Any problems can be seen and dealt with.

Al, was this the XP3 Preview that you downloaded? I am aware there were a lot of 'issues' with the preview. You might try Googling XP3 and see if there aren't some patches available for it.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the info, fellas! I think I've figured out somewhat as to what has happened. I think.
The OS I'm running is XP Home. I had been running Service Pack 1 since buying the computer 3 years ago, and had never had any issues with it. When my automatic update setup installed Service Pack 2, I started having issues with my CD drive. Rather than fight with it, I just un-installed SP2 and the problem went away. What was happening was that I could no longer access a blank disc from "Windows Explorer", ie I couldn't drag and drop stuff onto a disc like I could before. After the un-install everything worked normally.
Lately I've been getting notices from Microsoft that there would no longer be any support or updates for Service Pack 1. Yesterday the auto-updater installed Service Pack 3, and once again my problems with the CD drive started. Everything else seems to run normal. A check using Southern Breeze's method told me there were no issues with the drive or software. So, after messing around a bit more I discovered that I CAN still access the drive to burn a disc, I just can't do it right from Windows Explorer. I have to use my other burning programs, like Nero.
Thanks again for the assistance, I'm not the brightest around these silly machines.
