    Excellent book

I just started Scotland: Story of a Nation by Magnus Magnusson. It is wonderful! I just finished a painfully dry history of Germany which read more like a timeline than a book. Magnusson's account of the history of Scotland is rich and full of incredibly fascinating details. I cannot recommend it highly enough--and I'm only on chapter 4!

Do yourself a favor a pick up this book today!

Ah, yes! I read it a while back. I love how Magnusson ties historical landmarks or sites into modern Scotland events. It has a flavor of personal experience to it. I can't think of the name off the top of my head, but the stone on the hill with the foot print, for the leader to put his foot in, comes to mind; that it has actually had a replica cap put on it to protect it from erosion from people putting their feet in the hole, and I think he even gives the actual shoe size of the foot print. Full of those kinds of little details.

    * Guess it was at Dunadd, the story of the cap covering is in a footnote.

I read the book a few years ago and I can easily say that it is one of the better written books on Scottish history I've read. Never a dull moment with Magnusson's work.

I bought this book several months ago, and it is good reading. I am involved in a genealogical project that involves several families that were prominent between 1100 and 1500, and Magnusson's commentary made what I knew about the families much more relevant.

The book is widely available in the used book market at very good prices. I bought my copy through Amazon.com.

I received the book as a gift last Christmas and have been reading it off and on since then. I'm in the chapter about Mary, Queen of Scots right now. I loved the first few chapters but all the Kings has gotten kinda dry to me. Guess I like midevil history better.
    Somebody ought to.

This book is on my book shelf at the house and part of my ever growing To Be Read pile. Eventually I will finally get to read this book, eventually.

Thanks for the lead. I still have a copy (from 1980) of a book titled Vikings!, by one Magnus Magnusson. It was a companion book to a PBS series by the same name, that he was the presenter for.

    Good Book!

I read that book a couple of years ago, pretty good. It took me forever to get through it, often accompanied by a wee dram.

    Slainte,

    Slainte,
    Sounds perfect to me!

I also love a slow read, and a slow drink.

    Will check out the book!

    Cheers,

    Michael
