Just four years (Sep 1968-Sep 1972) as a US Marine, but that is enough to warp one forever. Did a tour in Chu Lai, RVN.

There are quite a few threads already about our members who are veterans. Quite a few of our members are also members of SAM's (Scottish American Military Society) and continue to serve as honor guards at Highland Games and other events.
I personally, was born in the Marine Corps at Camp Pendelton. I grew up in the Corps and even learned to count while watching my father drill Marines at Parris Island.
I joined the Corps during Viet-Nam even though I had a full student deferment. I served as a Helicopter pilot until the day we pulled out.
After leaving the Corps I went back to college and got my Master's Degree and started my own yacht company. But that was back in the days of the gas crunches and I went broke.
So I walked into an Army recruiting office one day, strode up to a desk and said - "OK, let me get this straight - If I join the Army - you will let me fly helicopters - Kill people - AND you're going to pay me? Where do I sign?" It was all I could do to get through that speech with a straight face. The look on the recruiters face was well worth the effort.
I served in the US Army as a pilot eventually becoming a test pilot on the Apache.
I retired right after Desert Storm.
So while I may not currently be serving, like many other Marines, I do not consider myself to be an ex-Marine. I am just no longer subject to reveille. I got promoted to PFC. (If you have served you know what that acronym stands for. I can't type it here 'cause it has the "F" word in it.)
To all of our serving and former members of the military and to anyone who put on a uniform each day and went to the job - I thank you for your service.

Look to my "about me" page and understand why I like copters. The rest of the story is also there, but does not explain why I would do such a crazy thing. Just being me, "All the Way - Everyday!"

12 years Royal Air Force, LTechAD, (radar technician) I was asked to stay on for another 10 years (the qualification for that being they expected you to be promoted at least twice more). But then medically down graded I'm allergic to Anaesthetics ! ( Susceptible to Malignant Hyperpyrexia under Anaesthesia) This was discovered during an operation between being asked and the actual re-sign on date and so I had to leave.
