Firestorm 2014
Those of you who have heard of the major wild fire burning Okanogan and Chelan Counties of Washington State, might wish to know that earlier this afternoon I watched as the south flank of the fire exploded, sending a mushroom smoke cloud straight up . . . . and that was against 50 MPH winds. . . to more than 20,000 feet. When these events occur at a fire of this nature, burning in this terrain, it is extremely dangerous.
Wholesale evacuation notices have been issued in both counties, one hospital has already needed to be evacuated and there will be more evacuations to come. The estimate at this hour is over 100 homes lost, and the little town of Pateros Washington has been devastated. Still, thank God, there is no reported loss of life.
At this hour there is zero containment of a fire that has already burned over 200,000 acres. So there is a lot of work to do and a lot of danger still lies ahead. For those who are going into harms way, and for those who will face the rebuilding of their homes and lives, your prayers and good wishes would be welcome.

There are a number of my MacLean kinsmen in the affected areas around Okanagan. As of today, none have lost their homes. Let's hope that these fires are controlled and extinguished soon.

.......and to those who lost their lives in the 'shooting' down of the Malaysian Airlines plane, those in the Philippines who lost their lives in Typhoon Rammasun, those who were badly injured in the GTV accident in France, those innocent people who have lost their lives in the present conflict in Gaza etc. etc.

The firestorm continues. Further evacuations were ordered yesterday, but there does seem to be some stability now in the firefighting effort.
There has been a tremendous outpouring of assistance in the forms of food, clothing, and housewares coming in from across the country. While the number of homes lost may seem small for a fire this size, the trailers and cabins which serve the agricultural workers on orchards and farms have not been counted, and their losses have been particularly great.
The firefighters have performed splendidly and continue to do so. I have seen the heroic become common place, and the Herculean become the order of the day. Bless 'em. Bless 'em all.

I`ve been visiting the Methow valley area since I was a boy, fishing, hunting, hiking, climbing. I`ts one of the most beautiful places in a very beautiful state. The loss of so many peoples homes is unprecedented around here, and truly tragic. When I think of the amount of prime wildlife habitat that has disappeared, and the wildlife that perished with it, my heart breaks.
