    Gaelic speakers ?

Are there any Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) speakers here at XMTS? If so…

My current question has to do with the “language t-shirts” that my hometown baseball team, the Boston Red Sox sell on their website with “Red Sox” translated into various languages: http://www.yawkeywaystore.com/Depart...der=1&page=all

Although they have a Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic) with the Irish tricolour, I was thinking that a Scottish Gaelic one with the Scottish Saint Andrew’s saltire flag would be quite nice to have - and to wear with my kilt the next time I get tickets to a game!

Problem is that my ‘training’ is in Latin and I do not know how to suggest that they write “Red Sox” in Gàidhlig and the online resources are scarce and dubious. For “red” I have found “dearg” and “ruagh” (either, whichever is more appropriate, would need to be inflected based on the gender of the word for “socks”), but I have found nothing for “socks” (I was actually thinking that it would be much more authentic to use the Scots word for “kilt hose” than the word for modern socks). Any help and/or guidance would be very much appreciated.

In the future, as an Associate Fellow of the IAAH (International Association of Amateur Heralds), it is only a matter of time before someone wants a motto translated into Scots, so I might keep your contact info handy

    Thanks,
    Stìophan (Steven)

Except for the variation in spelling, the Scots Gaelic would be the same as the Irish. (ie: stockings red) I have some Irish, but no Scots Gaelic, but if you look it up in a Scots Gaelic dictionary you'll soon sort it out.

MOR I was curious about the word placement like that... It's the noun then the adjective.. Much like the Latin based languages i.e. boots black, ect.

That was something I missed out on... When we came to this country, Mom felt it wasn't necessary to teach us Gaelic, since there was noone to talk with, and we could fit in better.

The only (both on the boards and in the world) person that I know with any Scottish Gaelic is Arlen.

My Gaelic is very sparse but I'll give it a try. The color red is simply dearg. (the 'g' is pronounced as 'k')

The three words I know for socks could be
stocainnean: (f); these are more like tights than socks.
mogan: (m); These are footless socks
    osan: (m); stockings or hose

So my best guess would be:
    osan dearg (stockings red)

or "Osanan dearg" if you were talking about two socks (osan dearg would be (one) red sock)

By the way, if you are tempted to add Boston to the phrase, (in Irish "Boston", scottish Gaelic may vary ) it goes at the end.

This is a good translation, except 'osan' is singular, the plural is OSAINAN, so I would say, osainan dearg is correct.
Ruadh is the adjective you would use for describing the colour of hair ie fiadh ruagh or red deer.

    Tha beagan gaidhlig agam....
