I find it hard to believe that there is such a vast demand for bagpipes that it is single-handedly wiping out forests full of African Blackwood. I would be willing to bet that bagpipes account for less than 5% of the usage of those trees.
There are 10 kinds of people in the world...
Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet that clarinets do far more damage than bagpipes.

Wow, I never thought I would ever say that...

I find it hard to believe that instruments could be the cause of so much use at all. My guess is the wood is used for other things not listed in the article.

" well as you can see , the constant manufacture of Bagpipes has drowned yet another polar bear, and caused greenland to drop into the sea, clearly these things are a menace and should be fitted with a catalytic converter !"

So...this is the Scottish equivalent of "Planting A Tree In Israel"?
I wish that it was possible to count on any of these projects in the Third World being of genuine benefit to the locals without graft and corruption by the local governments and middlemen. Please let this one be unaffected by such problems. Unabashed tree-hugger here...there ought to be some of these small changes that require some small sacrifices from some of the parties involved but, in the end, create benefits for everyone. It doesn't take much.
I really hope that it succeeds and they ought to put up a booth at every Highland Game and everybody should put at least the equivalent of the price of one pint in the kitty to plant more wood.
As to the origin of the pipes...I have a friend who's a volleyball coach who has a license plate frame that says, "Volleyball: invented by men, perfected by women." Thus: Bagpipes: invented by the Egyptians (?), perfected by the Scots.

I too thought it a very nice gesture and who knows, future generations of pipers may well look back and thank those that gave this as a Christmas Present.
Cheers
