    Happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day to my fellow kilted Canadians. We have a lot to be proud of in this quirky but exceedingly beautiful country. Tonight I will raise a glass to the Fathers of Confederation ( a great many of whom were Scots) who had the wisdom and perseverance to make this country a reality 147 years ago today.

    Happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day! 147 years ago, Canada went from being a group of provinces of the British Empire to a Country in its own right. It is a vast and diverse federation, but it is one that is worth the effort to maintain.

There are references to Canada before this period but they refer to a smaller territory and previous political entities. First there was Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec). They formed a dysfunctional veto ridden federation called Canada and were named Canada West and Canada East respectively. That is the government that those marked as Canada below were representing.

The fathers of Confederation, many of whom were Scottish born, who made it all happen were:

    Adams Archibald (Nova Scotia)
    George Brown (Canada)
    Alexander Campbell (Canada)
    George-Etienne Cartier (Canada)
    Edward Barron Chandler (New Brunswick)
    J C Chapais (Canada)
    James Cockburn (Canada)
    George Coles (PEI)
    Robert Dickey (Nova Scotia)
    Charles Fisher (New Brunswick)
    Alexander Galt (Canada)
    John Hamilton Gray (New Brunswick)
    John Hamilton Gray (PEI)
    T H Haviland (PEI)
    William Henry (Nova Scotia)
    W P Howland (Canada)
    John Johnson (New Brunswick)
    Hector Langevin (Canada)
    A A Macdonald (PEI)
    John A Macdonald (Canada)
    Jonathan McCully (Nova Scotia)
    William McDougall (Canada)
    Thomas D'Arcy McGee (Canada)
    Peter Mitchell (New Brunswick)
    Oliver Mowat (Canada)
    Edward Palmer (PEI)
    W H Pope (PEI)
    John William Ritchie (Nova Scotia)
    William H Steeves (New Brunswick)
    Sir Étienne-Pascal Taché (Canada)
    Samuel Tilley (New Brunswick)
    Charles Tupper (Nova Scotia)
    Edward Whelan (PEI)
    R D Wilmot (New Brunswick)

Both F B T Carter and Ambrose Shea of Newfoundland were at the meetings, but their province didn't join Confederation until 1949.

Speaking of Newfoundland, rather than celebrating Canada Day today, many are mourning the loss of a generation of brave young men who fell at Beaumont Hammel during the bloody Battle of the Somme.

So Happy Canada Day to all my Canuck brothers and sisters of xmarksthescot and to anyone else who feels a connection to our vast Northern paradise!

I saw that Nathan, I hope it's a case of "great minds think alike", rather than "fools seldom differ". I may have been quicker but your post is much more complete and enlightening to those who don't know our history. With that in mind on this day we should also thank our British members in "The Old Country" for allowing our nation to mature from scattered colonies to a new young nation 147 years ago through peaceful negotiation and diplomacy rather than the violence and revolution which marked the difficult birth of so many nations around the globe.

    Happy Canada Day to all.
As the family on my mother's side are all Canadians I've been to a few Canada Day events in the past but won't manage to attend any this year.
