How the Scots colonised New Zealand

Came across this interesting poster. I wonder if the ship went to the South Island? Single women travel for free!

Arrived in Port Nicholson after a 113 day voyage. Port Nicholson is now known as Wellington and is the NZ capital. See this: http://www.yesteryears.co.nz/shippin...chant1840.html

My mother's side of the family emigrated from Scotland to NZ two years later and arrived in Nelson.

    Thanks for the info Brian!

How did it come about the the South Island ending up having a much stronger Scottish presence than the North Island?

I saw a very interesting video about the history of the South Island and what I found especially interesting was that they had a Gold Rush very much like California's 1849 Gold Rush, but somewhat later in time. As I recall this was on the West Coast of the South Island. The same sort of things happened with Boom Towns and sudden wealth and broken dreams and all.
