I wish your computer had smell-o-vision
My 75 year old Indian Mother-in-law just shed her Sari and put one of my t-shirts on and got into the kitchen for what will be an all afternoon cooking spree. Now I know curry and masalas aren't for everyone, but I LOVE the way the house smells while and after she's been cooking. Right now I'm wishing you could smell my house right now--my sense of smell is on overload-

First couple of things in a long line to be cooked today-I wish I knew their names, but Oh how they smell soooo good-

One thing you may or may not know is that Indians love their pickle (They call it "Achaar"). I have to admit that it took a long time to gather enough guts to try it, but after doing so....its addicting. Kinda' on par with hot sauce.-

One of my mother-in-law's favorite drinks is coke, lemon and this stuff called Chaat (This stuff smells like sulfer).

Anyway, I'll think of you all while I'm gorging on Indian food tonight!

OMG that cup in her hand looks like it has some sort of deadly concoction in it!
I had never tried any sort of curry or Indian cuisine until a few years ago when I stayed with a friend for a few days in Richardson (TX), in the Dallas area. Apparently there's a large Indian population there, and he took me to several local restaurants that serve authentic Indian cuisine... meaning, we were the only white people in there.
I fell in love. I can't believe I'd never tried it before. Since then, I've found a couple of recipes that I can make at home which come close to that taste, and I've had to subsist on that when I need a curry fix. There's only one Indian restaurant that I can find in the San Antonio area, and it's way out of my way.
It must be wonderful to have someone so close to you who can cook these things for you. Bon appetit!

I love Indian cuisine! I only wish it loved me back!

Bro, that is one cruel surprise to bust out on a guy early the day! Now I'm going to be hungry for Indian food all weekend. I sure DO wish this computer had smell-o-vision.
One of my favorite Indian cookbooks is THIS.
Although, should anyone be shopping for a new cookbook, beware. This one tends to assume some basic knowledge of eastern cooking. As you can see from the reviews, some people love the book, a few really HATE it.
I've given several copies to other Indian food lovers as gifts over the past few years, and mine is well thumbed, with stickies for adjustments I've made to dishes (and a few rogue curry splashes on the covers )

I haven't had much exposure to Indian cuisine and am always looking for a good place to start sampling things to expand my culinary horizons.
I am a firm believer in World Peace Through Food...if we're all busy cooking for each other and turning each other on to our favorite things, I figger that we'll be too busy to fight over much else. I often say that to be a world class culture, you have to develop a world class cuisine.
I feel the same way about beer...imagine a World Homebrew Festival held on the scale of the Olympics! I hereby volunteer to be one of the judges.
"Tis the holidays and we all, I hope, have some of that good ol' home cooking to look forward to, Thanks for sharing yours.
Best

I think I'll produce a pan of curried veg tonight, with lots of mushrooms and almond milk to make it creamy.

I love Indian food. There's an Indian-Pakistani restaurant with a lunch buffet around the corner from where I work, and a new Indian-Thai (!!) restaurant opening up in the next week or so four doors east of the office.
Auld Argonian, you might want to try Hema's Kitchen. It's up on Devon Avenue which I know is a long trek for you. But everything is prepared freshly there - many restaurants cook the food and keep it in a steam table. Also there's an article today in the Chicago section of Huffington Post on the top Indian restaurants in Chicago.

Looking at this is killing me- my office moved from an area with about a dozen Indian restaurants to one that has none and the loss of my beloved Curry Thursdays lunches is still hurting, years later. Perhaps I should quit my job?

I had the good fortune to be raised in a very diverse neighborhood and to travel pretty widely in my younger days. Regional food is one of the things I miss most about traveling.
World peace through food. I like the idea.
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?
