Summer is here! My back yard is lush and green and I would love to enjoy it but I can't. "Why?", you may ask? Because my charming neighbors are making too much frelling noise, that's why. All day long its lawnmowers, weed whippers, screeching children (who set off my dogs, thus adding to the noise), power tools (you would think that everyone would be done adding to their houses or putting on decks but thanks to a wave of refinancing they've got fresh ammo to do even more unnecessary home "improvements") and hip-hop.

Now, I know I've asked about those inexpensive (cheap) Pakistani made bagpipes in the past and have been warned off them by every knowledgeable member of this forum...and I do want to save up and get a nice set of Dunbars some day....but as a weapon of sheer revenge what do you think? Perhaps my getting out at, oh, let's say five thirty in the morning and celebrating my heritage by piping in the new day with a set of hopelessly out of tune pipes might help to make them more sensitive to ambient noise levels? I mean, I DO still have my euphonium and a little "Ride of the Valkyries" played al fresco at three in the morning might make my point but I have to think that there's nothing like cheap bagpipes poorly played to really make their blood run cold.

Any suggestions for a "set list"?

Cheap pipes plus a set list is un-necessary. Just get a set of el-cheapos and improvise.

Rudeness in reponse to rudeness only escalates problems. You failed to mention during what hours your neighbors are working on their house. If it is exceptionally early and/or late, you should politely ask them if they could keep their work between 9 to 5. If they are playing music at unreasonable levels, let them know. Playing poor quality bagpipes loudly and badly is rude behavior. Consider your other neighbors. What will they think of you? Have you considered how your neighbors feel about the barking of dogs?

I sympathize with your plight and understand your need to vent. Let your better nature prevail. That way when you are learning to play your quality pipes you may have more understanding from your neighbors.

noisy neighbours are awful, but I agree with Panache : you should try with diplomacy before move to drastic methods.
However, if they want a volume war, well, war be!!!

Man, this is a tough one. I agree with Panache and the Sarge as far as being "mature" so-to-speak. But, then there's always that spiteful child inside of me! I'd say bring the day in the way it should be... w/ Scotland the Brave!

You failed to mention during what hours your neighbors are working on their house.

There are also city ordinances to think about. Most towns of any size have some sort of noise ordinance, so playing loud music in the wee hours could result in a fine for you.

As long as their activities are within the limits of any ordinances, they are probably within their legal rights. In this case, diplomacy is your best recourse.

If their activities are outside the regulated times, then call the cops on them.

No, guys....I only put forth this scenario as a joke....one of those "...you know what we OUGHT to do..." kinda things.

I wouldn't waste my time and money...let alone my breath...on something like that.

And I have to say that I personally do go out of my way to be as polite as I can about things...and that works...up to a point. Unfortunately I don't have considerate beings such as yourselves as neighbors. My experience with this lot is that they have an extraordinarily well developed sense of entitlement and politely asking them to act considerately is just going to provoke their perverse sense of righteousness.

I am going to try to propose the idea of lawnmowing hours...I'm not exagerating when I say that it is continuous around here. In the City of Chicago noise ordinances are somewhat nebulous....

But it was only a JOKE...honest...I appreciate your suggestions, though.
