Kilt-aholics
I can’t help notice that some members here own upwards of 28+ kilts.
Is this really necessary ? That’s one a day for nearly a month – get 3 more and it is.
Does anyone in Scotland own 28 kilts (except a kiltshop owner), apart from some toffs and celebs perhaps ? I knew more than one laird who wore the same kilt everywhere, even though old and threadbare (the kilt and the laird).
I know there’s such a thing as freedom of choice and if the kilts are being bought in Scotland, then hooray for Scotland’s economy. But it seems the next “Imelda Marcos of Kilts” inhabits this site.

It isn't me; I've pretty much put the kilt away.
I think you might need to take a look at Hamish's kilt collection; it's up there around one-hundred.

Heck, I'm way behind as I have only have thirteen. As soon as I can afford the tartan I want to make three more. Of course I want two more Ukilts. I rarely wear pants any more. (I could be addicted...)

I think Riverkilt is up there around fifty kilts, but I don't know if he comes in second.

I live in Scotland and I own over forty kilts, but only thirteen of these are formal 8-yard kilts, twelve in different tartans with which I have various connections and one all black heavyweight wool kilt which I often wore to Court when I practised law. The others are a motley collection, from 5-yard wool kilts, down to cheap polyviscose and acryclic kilts for knocking around in, and a selection of non-trads such as the Utilikilt, the Blaklader Craftsman Kilt, the R-Kilt and the Freedom Kilts cargo model. I wear a kilt almost every day and all my kilts do get a turn of being worn. Kilt collecting can become addictive, there is such a huge variety available.

It is like anything else. People tend to collect "stuff". It might be cars, baseball cards, electronics, etc. Over the years they tend to collect. As for kilts some won't be worn; maybe too small/large or no longer catch your eye. These collectables become addictive to some degree. I currently have ten kilts and I know I will add to the collection. I have a USAkilt on the way with my sites on a couple of others. I also want to try my hand at making a kilt or two. I could easily be at 25 in a a couple of years. I don't see myself tossing any kilts out even if they don't fit anymore.

You will find that the daily wearers will have more than the casual wearers such as myself. But as stated above it can be a personal hobby collecting them. Hamish is our god of the master kilt collection with 98 now I believe, but he is a daily kilt wearer so I am sure he goes through most of his closet several times per year, as long as they still fit. With others it is like seeing something you like, can afford, want, although know you may not get full use out of it over time. It still is a desire for acquisition and ownership of something unique and beautiful, and the more you wear it, functional as well.
Kilt-aholism? Yeah maybe. Kilt addiction--maybe. More like kilt affection and fascination.

I have perhaps 20 lengths of material which are either kilts now, will be kilts when I get around to finishing the sewing, were kilts at one time and then were partly dismantled to alter something and never made it back, are half folded and pinned but than I hit a snag on the other half - no better make that 30, as there are the couple of bags in the loft as well.
This isn't counting pieces of fabric which have been measured and the pleating worked out but are still otherwise unaltered - another ten at least.
Plus I really need to neaten up a couple of plaids which have been worn without proper finishing and really need to be looked after, plus the thing which is somewhere between a winter dressing gown and a great kilt.
It might be wiser to do more work and then count....

The short answer is, "no." But why should it matter? Personally, I find the people with large kilt kollections (like Hamish and Ron, for example) to be an invaulable resource. If I'm considering a new kilt I like to see it "in action" before I take the leap. Seeing the finished product is much more informative than guessing what the kilt might look like from a swatch. Both Hamish and Ron have been generous enough to post (and host elsewhere) very good pics of themselves wearing their kilts. On more than one occasion I have bought myself a kilt because of one of their photos. Kudos to the Kollectors!
As for myself, I have 18 kilts (#19 is on order). Do I need that many? No, but I'm a performer and I like changing it up for the shows. It's fun to have a kollection to choose from. I'm also a fan of UKs (I have 6) for out and about wear. My fave is the black Survival, but I don't want to always wear black. So I've got a brown Workman's and a green Original, a green camo Original, etc... I see it as no different than having a couple of pairs of jeans and shorts (which most men have) for daily, casual use...
So no, it's not necessary, but I'm sure I'll have 28 at some point in the future--because I don't just wear the kilt as a symbol of Highland attire. I wear kilts because I enjoy wearing them.
Kilt on!
