    Lots of Gin....

.....but nothing to go with it...

For the past 3 years, my boss at Christmas bestows upon me a nice bottle of Gin. Unfortunately, I have no clue how to drink it properly.

What, my kilted friends, is your favorite concoction involving Gin as the main ingredient?

Three favorites that come to mind are:

Gin and Tonic - Fill the glass with ice, add one oz. of gin (or more) and fill with tonic water (I prefer Schweppes). Squeeze a wedge of lime over the top.

Martini (note: when I was bartending, Martini meant gin martini, you had to ask for a vodka martini, now it's the other way around). Classic recipe is to 1 1/2 oz. of Gin and 1/2 oz. of Dry Vermouth (Martini & Rossi?), pour over ice and shake or stir, strain into a martini glass with an olive. Some folks use 2 oz of gin with just a suspicion of vermouth.

Gin Gimlet - 1 1/2 - 2 oz of gin and 1/2 oz of Rose's Lime Juice, ususally served on the rocks.

Gin and tonics are lovely, try to get good quality tonic water and a wedge of lime and you are set.

Martinis are also lovely, a little vermouth, an olive or a couple of cocktail onions and you are set.

Gin is an acquired taste, but I have worked very hard to master it!

    Cheers

PS: If you are still having trouble figuring out what to do with them you could always mail them out to California for proper disposal!

    Nice boss, don't quit
    Dirty martini:
over ice, in a shaker add
    4 parts gin
    1 part vermouth
1 part olive juice (the dirty in dirty martini, omit if you prefer the 'perfect martini')
shake, pour through strainer to remove ice
    add 2 olives
    enjoy

Or, Gin and tonic with lime garnish. May want to start with this if you've never had Gin. Recipes vary, I think you'll want more tonic to gin;experiment and have fun!

Like George, I would think regifting in order, especially if one doesn't drink gin.

As I don't drink gin, I have no other good advice to offer, so I'll go do something else now.

I drink my gin and tonics with a very small drop of Angostura bitters and occasionally a splash of sweetened lime juice too. The bitters totally transforms the taste of the gin and has the surprising effect of making it palatable for people who think they don't like gin. I never use it with the best gins, however, because their complex and refined flavors need to be enjoyed on their own.

The other day I was introduced to a new gin cocktail that I am totally enamored with for the summer. It was called a gin Collins, but it was more like the experience of a gin mojito. Besides the gin , it included basil and lemon infused simple syrup and club soda. VERY refreshing.

    Regards,
    Rex.

nah -- re-gifting is saved for the 'unusables'....

it is just having to ACQUIRE the taste of gin ... and I plan on having fun doing so... in a responsible way of course!

Gin and Tonic, with lime and Scweppes, or martini are my favourite methods of engagement with Lady Gin, though Rex has tweeked my interest and it is Friday!

what sort of gin is it? Personally I prefer Bombay Sapphire with my G & T and Plymouth London Dry for a martini. they're quite different.
