    Memorial Day

On this Memorial Day let us not only pay tribute to the men and women in the armed forces, but also to the men and women that protect our shores while we go off to foreign lands so that others can remain safe at home.

I may shiver at night with wet boots in the sand as I hold my rife, however, I do this so others can remain safe and warm in their bed as other soldiers that often wear blue or brown and have a star or shield keep an eye on my loved ones.

    God Bless those who serve.

Agreed. Also let us also remember those of other countries who serve also. WE SALUTE YOU!

Our little town has a ceremony in the local cemetery every year. I'll be there kilted again this year.

My town has a small parade to the cemetery. This will be my third year of following along and attending the ceremonies.

    Last year the guests were:

A USN Captain (Ret): A short and red-faced man. But not short on command presence. I would not have wanted to see that red face up close in anger.

A WWII USA Sergeant: In charge, and everyone knows it.

And a young USA Captain (Major pending): A veterinarian.
    Veterinarian?
Didn’t seem like much -- until we learned that he had served in Iraq and had taken casualties in his command. While his unit was treating local animals!
There’s no safe duty over there.

Last year the sergeant bemoaned the fact that local high school bands don’t participate any more because too many members are out of town for the holiday weekend.
    I’m wi’ him.

Ok, Labor Day has become politically controversial, and Veterans Day is mostly for the living, but Memorial Day I think should be a day of remembrance.

My mood: My father passed last year.

During the Great Depression he scavenged coal from railroad tracks to help his family heat their home.

He enlisted in the USN after Pearl Harbor. He was selected for flight training. He wanted to be a carrier pilot. He tipped a trainer biplane up on its nose on landing and washed out.

Then he transferred the USAAF where he became a B-17 bombardier-navigator (8th AF). He flew 29 (!) combat missions over Europe.

With multi-generation service back to Gettysburg (Union) he was the first in the family to serve as an officer.

So he was a USN and USA and USAF (Reserves) vet. Not many can say that.

Nothing thereafter in his life, even his impending death, in any way frightened him.

He had one marriage and raised two children. He stopped smoking after a conversation with his doctor to be sure that he outlived my mother.
He thought that it was his responsibility not to die first and leave her alone.

THAT is the kind of man (and the many others like him) that we should remember on Monday.

I hartily agree. In some countries it is referred to as "Rememberance Day". Let us remember and never forget the ultimate sacrifice made by the brave men and women in uniform whether it be military of law enforcement. "All gave some. Some gave all".

I agree whole heartedly. It's anyone who serves their community who commands the respect... They put their community first before themselves..sometimes it's a thankless position, but there are those who recognize the sacrifices they make..

Let us remember all who sacrificed themselves so others may live, be it at home or afar.. The price is the same.... And how we repay this price.... To Remember!

And lets not forget those brave service members so dedicated to their calling, they're even willing to enter a fire-fight in their pink "I Love NY" boxer shorts:

    God bless our troops...!

I never joined the military, I was too immature at the time. Wish I would have. Thanks ladies and gentlemen for your sacrifice!
