    Munich 1958

Can I ask for Xmarkers to spare a moment to remember the victims of the 1958 Munich air disaster,

theres an excelent and very moving website that details the events of 1958,

the story is that Manchester united manager, Scot Sir Matt Busby was charged with forming a football team composed of the best players in the world, the result were known as the "Busby babes" after a a match against Redstar Belgrade the plane they were travelling on crashed at Munich airport, killing several of the team. of particular note the great Duncan Edwards, rated as the best player in the world at the time.

even if your not a united fan (which Im not, Celtic through and through) its a tragic story and these were the giants of the sporting world at the time.

I came from Bellshill in Lanarkshire where Sir Matt hailed from, he is still revered in Bellshill with a street being named after him and the sports centre is called the Matt Busby Centre. My father who was the local postman, knew him well and always talked about how Matt always sent money home to his mother until she died.
Lets hope there will be uninterupted observance of the minute' silence at the derby game next week. I think it should be remembered that he played for city as well a managing united. Matt certainly knew a footballer as his first signing was Celtic's great winger and number 7, Jimmy Delaney who came from Cleland also in Lanarkshire.

My father did an ad for Heinz soup with Bobby Charlton who was one of the survivors.

Just goes to show it can be a small world of interconnected people and events.
