New Eagle Scout
My son just called me up to tell me he passed his Eagle boards for Boy Scouts. I can't be any prouder right now, he wants to know if I buy him a MacLaren kilt can he wear it to his Court of Honor. I told him it would cause quite abit of a stir if he does and he needs to think about it for awhile. anyways Yahoooooooooo!

From one Eagle to another congrats! I personally wouldn't wear the MacLaren tartan unless he completes Wood Badge.

Congratulations to your Son, and to you for raising an Eagle.
I'll agree on the Tartan topic. As I understand it, that is solely a Wood Badge honor. But with thousands of tartans out there, surely there is another that would work
Is your Troop open to a kilt being worn at the ceremony? Otherwise, you'll also have to be ready to address the debate about what is and is not an authorized Boy Scouts of America uniform. Depending on your, your Troops, Your Councils, and the Boy Scouts enforcement of the regs.

Congratulations Muffinman, you must be very proud and happy with your son.
Now my question about the MacLaren tartan.....all I can find out about it is the usual clan fights and one survivor from Culloden.
What does the wood badge have to do with wearing that tartan ? I am assuming it is something in the Boy Scouts they earn and the rest of the conversation sounds like he might raise eyebrows If he wears a kilt so it doesn't seem like it is connected thru the organazation....that I think is only in the U.S. (is Scouting world wide now?)
sorry about all the questions and congratulations again to your son.

Congrats to you and your son. We are patiently waiting for word back from the national Scouting office on my son. He passed his board of review in August. Now we are in the hurry up and wait phase. They said it takes 45 to 90 days for word to come back that we can have the court of honor. So I can really start to jones about it a week from today.
I have to ask. How old is your son? Mine is 14. His Scoutmaster always said that the boys need to get their Eagle before the fumes get to them: perfumes, car fumes, etc.

Tess,
Back in England, the land for the 1st wood badge course taught by Baden Powell was in Gilwell, and was donated by a MacLaren. Since then, all wood badgers recieve in addition to their beads, a necker with a swatch of MacLaren Plaid as a way to honor the donor. Scouters who have taken Wood Badge and completed their ticket have the option to join Clan MacLaren as an associate.

I was 17 when I earned Eagle. It's a personal pet peeve of mine when I see 13, 14 year old Eagles who seem to breeze through the ranks. An Eagle takes a bit of maturity. Also I find requirements are getting watered down a bit and also service project are starting to lack. I mean really, how many choose to build a small trail or benches every year.

Thank you EHCAlum for that story.
To me part of the magic of tartans are when they have a special meaning.
Is the soon to be Eagle scout is in the states or Scotland ?
