true but at least you'll be able to know whether your actually drinking the real deal or not ,
if i had to pay extra for that peace of mind i dont think id worry that much about costs far too much stuff we purchase and consume comes from places unknown and that unsettles me sometimes

Interesting...we are just going through this right now with British Columbia wines. Seems wineries were able to use grapes they had procurred from wherever and so long as the bottle said, in the wee fine print 'cellared in BC' the bottle could be passed off as a BC wine. Steps are now being taken to ensure that if you buy a bottle of BC wine, it is indeed from grapes grown in BC.

A lot of people felt pretty ripped off, thinking they were supporting a local product.

Rules on California wines have always been somewhat lax as well. I'm not sure anymore of geographic constraints, but I do remember that if 51% of the grapes are of the named variety, the wine can be labelled as such. Apellation laws are all well and good but only as effective as the respect paid them by other governments. The French believe that only wine made in its own bottle in the region of Champagne should be called Champagne and have appellation laws to that end. California wineries, even some that are quite reputable, use the term champagne to refer to any white sparkling wine.
