A new way to know ya!

    Rabble,

I was thinking how neat it would be if perhaps there was a section (Maybe in the new members section) where there could be a thread that just listed members, their real names, and maybe a picture. All of this would be optional and totally voluntary of course, I just think it would be neat for new board members to get to know us easier and quicker as well as older members to be able to pick out newer members at highland games, etc.

Just a thought, I included a poll to see if anyone else liked the idea to get an estimation. Just throwing this out there!

    Sure, Burly!

I list my name, and my picture & info are available on my personal profile page here, but a lot of our folks don't put much information there. I'd love to know who more folks are, where they're from, etc. To be honest, if they just filled in their personal pages a bit more completely, I'd enjoy that.

I voted yes but fully respect those who may disagree. I'm a member of another forum (job related, not kilt) and after several years of being the largest on the web on that subject matter many of us old timers knew each other well via the forum. It was quite a shock when a new sub forum called mugshots was added. Some of those crusty old trappers turned out to be quite attractive young ladies and others like me were just crusty and old. LOL

I just think it would be helpful as I always become so tied to forum names and avatars, once in a while I forget faces and real names so then I get all confused when pcitures and such are posted. Partly to do with my poor memory.

I remember a little while ago when someone suggested that members could make sure that their locations were given, some other members got rather upset and bothered, so I'm afraid that I don't imagine your idea is going to work, sadly I'd say. My contact details are in my profile and there are links there which give anyone interested lots of details about me, should they so wish!

Paul, I imagine that, like me, being in business you long ago accepted that everything about you is plastered all over the world wide web. It's a double edged sword. I have never posted my home number to the web, only my two direct business lines, but somehow I have had to train the mother in law how to answer a business line on the home phone.

Pictures aren't really enough for me to recognize anyone in person, anyway.

I knew Alan H. was into heavy athletics and had seen his picture. But I didn't realize how tall he is. Really surprised me when we finally met at a games.

Re: A new way to know ya!

There is another way to check the listed information of our members. We have a member's list.

Look up near the top of this page and you will find a dark blue navigation bar. See "Community" near the middle? Pull down that menu and you will see the member's list.

In the Members list there are columns for the username, (a current status if any), the member's home page, their join date, date they last logged on and the total no. of Posts.

You can also see their Avatar, profile picture and birthday.

For any more details you would need to click on the person's name to go to their full profile.

But as I work with our member's list on a daily basis I can tell you that the vast majority of our members choose not to list any personal information. As has been stated above many people do not want their personal info on the web. I can't blame women for this and many of our young members are so used to being shielded behind a username and avatar that they feel strange listing a real name or posting a pic showing their face. That is just a fact in the world today.

But I agree with the idea. Every new member since I took over the forum has received a personal welcome PM from me. In that message I ask them to fill out their profile as much as they are comfortable with. Very few do. So creating another list of members would probably do little good to meet the concept presented here.

    Sorry.

Re: A new way to know ya!

For what its worth I voted yes. Although I understand the reasons why many wouldnt want too. My real name is at the bottom in my signature and if someone wants to see my ugly mug I have no objections. Sometimes its nice to put a face to the names.
