Old Jazz TV footage on youtube

I was snooping youtube for some klezmer music to send to our guest percussionist for this upcoming gig and I quite by accident came across Blue Rondo a Turk, performed by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Intrigue'd, I searched on youtube for Brubecks name and I almost passed out when lo and behold, up came about 20 old (1958 t0 1968) TV sessions, where the quartet played many of their most famous tunes.

    There are three of them.

I got to thinking....in the early 70's when I was in Jr High, and then 75 - 79 when I was in high school, I was a serious Maynard Ferguson fan. Dad loved Louis Armstrong, and had about a dozen Louis Armstrong All Stars records in the house (all of which I still have). But he also loved Al Hirt and Pete Fountain. In my dreams I imagined my fantasy trumpet section, in 1976

    Dizzy Gillespie
    Al Hirt
    Maynard Ferguson
    Chuck Mangione

So imagine my shock, amazement and utter delight at finding, on youtube, a session where Sarah Vaughn starts out singing Take the A Train, and all four of those Trumpet Players are on the gig, along with Don Cherry playing piccolo trumpet.

Wow! Who'd a thunk? Thanks for the inspiration to search for the old within the new. Look forward to sharing some of this with my sighted cohort.

I have a (Decca?) recording of Louis Armstrong "Live in Symphony Hall," recorded in 1947 if memory serves.

As I'm of the same age, give or take a year, I remember the MF Horn series of albums from Ferguson.

    What a sweet "Take Five."

One of my all-time favorite tunes. Joe Morello can really tap out a solo....

    Those are great!
When I was in college there was a few of us that made the Maynard Ferguson concerts whenever he came to town. Once, he was at a local junior college with his group and the hall they were playing in only held about 250 people. We watched the first show and then went back in for the second show. After the intro number he looked around the audience and asked, "How many of you were at the first show?" About two thirds of the audience raised their hands, so Ferguson says, "Well, then lets do something different."
He motioned for the band to take a seat, then stepped out onto the apron of the stage and proceeded to fill the hall with the most beautiful version of selections from the opera "Pagliaci" imaginable. He ended his solo set with his own take on "vesti la guipa" and brought the house down. The next year he released Pagliaci on an album.
    Great times!
