    Old Scottish tradition!

For those of you who like old Scottish traditions, here's what my daughter was doing this morning!

I've been there when it's on, but I got up long before the students, went to work and came back to the hotel so I never saw it. They do seem better there, in not upsetting the Town as much as some universities.

More tradition - a fresher (first year student) at St Andrews is known as a "bejant"/"bejantine" from the French "bec jaune" = yellow-beak i.e. fledgeling. The corresponding terms at Aberdeen are "bajan"/"bajanella" showing the French influence in the founding of Scottish universities.
Yet more tradition - students dressed formally for the "pier walk" at the start of the academic year

The lassie on the right is a third-year arts student, the other 2 are fourth-year students - the way the gowns are worn is the clue.

    Thanks for the reminder.
My daughter graduated with an Honours Degree in Modern History from St. Andrews University in 2004. I remember she would tell of the antics on Raisin Monday and the Foam Parties.
