Which outfit for graduation?
Not my graduation, but my students. For those who aren't aware, I'm an English instructor at (the Japanese equivalent of a) junior college (2-yr technical school).
The background to this decision was discussed in a thread here: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...tionary-57299/
Well, looks like I've got to decide quickly. The date snuck up on me and it's this Friday. So just give me your opinion: in the poll, just choose A) or B). If you don't know, don't care, or like/dislike both options equally, choose one of the joke (null) options C) or D).
Thanks, rabble!
Option A)

- Isle of Skye
- gray Argyll
- dress shirt
- Burgundy Bulldog tie
Option B)

- black leather 3-pc suit
- dress shirt
- bright orange, "modern art" tie
Option C)

- au naturel

It's a no brainer dude, go with the kilt! Although, I would choose a more subdued tie.

Subdued as in colour? Or pattern?

The leather suit is very cool but the IOS is more professional and more befitting the day, in my humble opinion.

I'd say go for the Isle of Skye, but I would pair it with a tie that brings out one of the colours of the tartan, the red in this case does seem a bit disconnected from the rest of the outfit. Another thing I think perhaps the hose are a tad too high, maybe you should give yourself a bit more of a cuff on the hose.

I agree with McMurdo and freelancer about the tie. Maybe a blue that closely matches the blue in the kilt.

Had your studies centered around Science as opposed to liberal arts, I would recommend a more traditional suit or the Kilt outfit, which by the way, is snappy. Since it is an English class, anything goes, even c.
Disclaimer: I am fashionably impaired, and must pass everything for revue from the fiance.

Given what you've said previously about the usual dress at such affairs I think the leather suit would be a huge mistake. I just have a hard time taking a leather suit seriously and I think your colleagues and your students, who've accepted individual pieces of this outfit in an academic setting might be a bit put off by the entire ensemble. They might feel you don't take the ceremony seriously.
The kilt outfit, on the other hand, is restrained and dignified and looks like you are taking great pains to look your best for your students' special day. I think it suits you better anyway.
I concur with the comments about the tie and the hose. A tie that brings out one of the less prominent colors of the tartan would be a better choice and one thing I have learned in this forum is that hose tops should reach no higher than just above the broadest portion of the calf. You don't want to look like a Catholic school girl in knee socks and plaid skirt, do you?
I believe it was Jock who testified to the Japanese fascination with and knowledge of the kilt and all its appurtenances. He cautioned against wearing it in any other manner than that which is in keeping with Highland tradition and custom. I notice you're not wearing flashes and, while not everyone always wears flashes, that is just the sort of detail that might make them feel the outfit is incomplete.
Whatever you wear, though, have a good time and share the joy of your students and their families.

Ok the kilt is the way to go. IT IS! Now a spot of unsolicited advice! Raise the kilt so that it is no lower than the centre of the knee cap, higher would be even better to the top of the knee cap. That would solve another problem, the gap between the top of your kilt and the bottom of your tie. Your hose tops could be lowered by at least an inch. Is there any chance that you could get a day sporran?
