For P1M, an old view of Dumfries
Found this on another site, thought the group would get a kick out of it.
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

What a fascinating shot! The place has changed very little. The Midsteeple, in the centre, an ancient meeting place and Town Hall, was shrouded in scaffolding when I last saw it. The Burns statue photo location featured in almost every Ferintosh Gathering, is immediately in front of the church in the distance.
One thing I would say is that the shops looked rather smarter then than they, unfortunately, do now.
OK, I've had my say - over to you Robertson.......
Take care,
Ham.

For any who may be interested, there are many more turn of the century photos of the UK located here..

There is a sketch in the Globe of Burns' funeral procession in 1796 which shows a similar view. Not a lot has changed in Dumfries except the mid steeple has been covered in scaffolding for the past few years. I'd guess from the clothing styles and the horse drawn vehicles this view dates from perhaps 1890-1900.

Wow. Thanks for the pics Mike. Here is a shot of P1M, Emma and my partner Ron at a different angle in front of the same fountain in Dumfries in June 2007.
