Photos of NYC in 1930s
Of possible interest to our NYC-based rabble: photos of NYC taken in early 1930s. . .
". . .that reveal a city recognizable but starkly different from the metropolis we know today.
"Abbott began her signature project—now available online and for purchase (at economy-friendly prices) through the New York Public Library—in 1933 and eventually published it for New York World’s Fair in 1939. A wonderful example of straight photography (the photos resemble momentary glimpses from the window of a speeding taxi or train), Changing New York shows the age of familiar New York landmarks: The starkly modern American International Building rises behind a horse and buggy; downtown’s Art Deco towers are matched by the masts of a working ship; and elevated tracks pass by the Jefferson Market Courthouse. Abbott’s photographs were supposed to be a portrait of a city in rebirth, but now we can consider them history. "

Interesting link, I'll have to pass that one on to some friends who are interested in photography.

Wow, thanks so much for this, Sydnie. I'm even old enough to remember some of those buildings which are long gone!

I have been traveling to Manhattan (and parts of Long Island) for about 26 years, now, for business and pleasure. I've been to McSorley's a couple of times. It's the oldest pub on Manhattan, I think. I had friends that lived in the Chelsea Apartments about 20 years ago, and a former girlfriend moved from Houston to an apartment on Park Row. No more newspaper printing there, now, I don't think. Great pics. Thanks! I'll be back in June for the first time since 2007!

Thanks for the link Sydnie.
I have one pic from Madison Square Gardens, New York on my Flickr pages, taken by my late father during 1942.

Was just thinking of you as I logged on, as I am wearing the kilt pin which you gave me at Ventura.
Take care and regards to Bob.

It is indeed the oldest pub in the entire city, Jack. Do let us know when you'll be coming, and we can see about having a meet to welcome you among your kilted brethren here.
