    Picture Resizing...

    Hey guys and gals,

I am not that "tech savvy", so I turn to the rabble for a little advice...

I'm re-doing our whole site and have our web guy doing most of the work, but to keep SOME of the costs down, I'm re-doing the pictures myself. I have the pictures taken and the images saved, but I'm having a problem making the thumbnail pics all the same size. I am using MS Paint to reduce the picture sizes a bit (I know what a basic system it is).

The problem I have is when I'm trying to crop the pics and save them as thumbnails. I have to "eyeball it" and it always ends up an inconsistant size.

    Here's what I'm looking for...

A FREE "photoshop" type system that I can download (link where to download it would be appreciated). It needs to show me what the height and width of my CROPPED pics are (preferrably as I'm cropping them). This way, I can choose a standard height and width and crop ALL the thumbnail pictures to that exact size, therefore "standardizing" the site a bit... Currently all my pictures are saved as jpegs, so it would have to work with that.

    HELP!

Try Irfanview. It's free and supports resizing and resampling. Ver. 4.10 can be downloaded on tucows and elswere...

Try GIMP for windows at http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/

it is a great program that is free to boot. It is a close to a full function product as you can get without placing ADOBE on the front of it.

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

I'll second the GIMP - I've used it with both Windows and Mac.

I'll third the GIMP. I've used it in both Windows, and Linux.
If you are familiar with Photoshop you can also also download Gimpshop www.gimpshop.com. It is the GIMP, but the user interface has been redesigned to approximate Photoshop better.

Even using Microsoft Word is easier for getting exact sizes. If you copy a picture into Microsoft word, and then right click on it, you can format size to the exact dimensions every time. I believe it's the 2nd tab once you right click to format picture. That way every pic will be the same. Plus you don't have to go out and download any more programs to help you with all of it. I'll write a tutorial document if you'd like with screenshots and examples if you would like me to. I write training documents for a living so it would only take me a few minutes to put together.
