piper needed for May 18 in San francisco

SAMS Post 1921 is looking for a piper in the San Francisco area to pipe for us while we present colors on board the WWII Liberty ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien. This is the O'Brien's annual Memorial cruise and will be from noon to 4 PM on Saturday 5/18. We will go out under the Golden Gate Bridge, have a memorial service off of Point Bonita and then sail along the SF waterfront returning to pier 45 in Fisherman's Wharf at 4PM. free beer and wine or soft drinks and a chance to sail on a WWII veteran.
Please PM me if you can make this event. It will be most appreciated.

    Wow!
That sounds like a really fun time. Spent a fair amount of time working on Victory ships that were in the yards being refurbished in the late 60's, but never got to go out on one.
I am truly sorry that I will not be there.
    Enjoy yourself!

I can't help with a piper, but I do hope you'll be able to find one, and that you'll post photos here of the event. I visited Jeremiah O'Brien and USS Pampanito back in 1991 with my grandparents. My grandfather, who traveled to India and back on a troopship (and was made a shellback) was very visibly moved by Jeremiah O'Brien. What I wouldn't give to hear those stories again.

It'd cost too much for you to fly me out there, though it sounds like fun!

Have you checked with the pipe bands in the SF area? Though many pipers charge a fee, some pipers may leap at the opportunity. Something might be negotiated...

Here's a partial listing of bands with active web pages gleaned from the Bob Dunsire forum.

Macintosh Pipe Band, Marin County: http://www.macintoshpipeband.org/
Monterey Bay Pipe Band, Moss Landing: http://www.montereybaypb.org/
    Piedmont Highlanders, Piedmont: http://www.piedmonthighlanders.org/
Prince Charles Pipe Band, San Francisco: http://www.pcpb.org/
Santa Cruz Pipes and Drums, Santa Cruz: http://www.santacruzpipeband.com/
    Stuart Highlanders, Menlo Park: http://www.stanford.edu/~wrinnes/Stuart/Stuart.html
Stewart Tartan Pipes & Drums, Saratoga: http://www.stewarttartan.com/

    Hope you find your piper.

If I could afford the ticket I'd fly out, if I could pipe.

Thanks for that list of bands EagleJCS. I have passed that info on to my post. Hopefully we will find a piper soon. The ceremony on board the ship will not be nearly as nice if we don't have a piper.

One other possibility: The US Coast Guard Pipes & Drums might have a member in the area:
