    Poems from me

Hello, I thought I'd like to share:

Not all of these are Scottish related.

I'm learning Scottish on my lonesome, any corrections would be appreciated

    The Lovers' Coil

"I like your hair up" I said

"I like your white dress" I said

"Gu raibh maith agat...agaibhsa" she said

    We both giggled like
Together on the Steppes so long ago

    Mo Gra
    Mo Gra

    Mo cuisla
    Mo cuisla

In walking through St. Stephen's Green
    the fin de siecle
Who knew what marvels were waiting
    there were rumors of mechanical
    beasts of burden

And yet where would these beasts take their lover's
To places yet they had already been their's before?

S'e cho moran gaol agam oirbh, mo gra gu brach

    Chestnut Fire
    Preternatural Beauty

    Before the Stars
    There you are

    Of explosive sights
    Of cataclysmic sounds
    Knowing not of material bounds

    How we love thee

    Teine ruadh

    Mi-nadurra Maise

    Romh an rionnag
    S'e thu ansin

    Seallam fradharc a' spreadhadh
    Seallam tuimhneach spreig
    Chan criochan corporra aithne aice

S'e cho moran gaol againn oirbh

    Cat

    Lick, Lick, Lick

    Soft tongue full of barbs

    Lovely Personality
    Lovely Person?

Perhaps it is better if you don't talk

    Talk back
    Take back

    Your Love

    Titan
In walking through the forest, with Dog, Roebuck and Lapwing by my side
The beauty that is hers is spread open wide.
The torches that guide us and spare us when world's collide
That is the Time when Titans die.

    To surrender to the other
And know that they will be there
In that will I find cold comfort.

One does not know when the castle is reigned in
Nor when the Sky will become our skin.
Or to shuck our coat of Sin
That is the time when our loved ones choose to die.

    Baoth-chleasachd (Pantomine)
    Tha i anseo
    Tha i anseo
    Tha i anseo

    Chan i anseo
    Bha mi ach amadan

    An teid mi?
    Is ea
    Chan e riamh
    Furasda

    Tha thu sa do gnogeis
    le do gnogeas
    thu gnogach
    gnoigeag

    Bhitheas thu
    dean ar'-a-mach
    de dean amarach

    Anger
When those that you thought were friends stab you and your family in the back

    It can be very painful

When you still see them after,
it is forgetfulness, it is not forgiveness
    it is oblivion

To see them shine while you wallow
is to look at the beloved star

    I starve

    But I am fat

    Fearg

Nuair iad gu smaointich thu gu raibh cairdean airson troimh-lot thu agus do clann cul

    Bi i craiteach

Nuair bhitheas thu gam a' faicinn an deidh
Tha i diochuimhn chan i mathanas
Chan e an aite sam bith

Faicadh thu gam dealrach gu bheil thu loirc sin uine
gu bheil faic ag runach rionnag

    Reangaich mi

    Ach bheil mi reamwhar

    Hi ciltmore,

I will be blunt - I do not understand your poetry. I do not understand the symbolism, so I do not understand what you are trying to say.

Sorry, I wanted to sugar-coat this, but in the end that only insults us both.

    Regards

    Chas

A couple of them slightly remind me of some of John Donne's poems.

Looking over the forum information, I wonder how the copyright of these poems is affected by posting them on XMTS?
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

This is a very interesting question, Ted.

Unless I am looking in the wrong place, I see nothing in the rules about relinquishing copyright. I appreciate that there are differences between US and UK copyright law but in essence, if I take the picture, I own the copyright. Ciltmore wrote the words, so to my understanding, he owns the copyright.

Having said that, at the bottom of the page is this:

Do not reproduce anything published on www.xmarksthescot.com without express written permission from the author or Steve Ashton.

By posting or submitting material, uploading files, inputting data, or engaging in any other form of communication through Steve Ashton or the X Marks the Scot Forum, you are granting Steve Ashton, the X Marks the Scot Forum and all associated entities a royalty-free, perpetual, non-exclusive, unrestricted, worldwide license to use, reproduce, edit, modify, adapt, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, communicate to the public and publicly display the submitted content (in whole or in part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it other works in any form, media or technology now known or later developed for the full term of any rights that may exist in the content
So although we are not giving away our copyright, we are giving away everything that makes up the copyright.

What does for the full term of any rights that may exist in the content mean and what or who are these un-named 'associated entities'.

This is a real can of worms, Ted. This whole lot should be in the Rules and explained and not at the bottom of the page where nobody looks.

    Regards

    Chas

Ya that's why I wondered how it would affect the copyright, like if he got one of those poems published, he would still own the copyright, but... Hmmm, I have no idea, but I would think about it before posting a work without some kind of citation like when it was written etc.

    It's boiler plate...

...and it describes in legalese what happens on this site when someone posts, or replies to a posting. In its simplest terms it says:

"Okay, if you let me post here I give you and others the right to respond, to quote, or to use this posting to go off in another direction."

Broadly speaking this is a licensing agreement. As I read it, this licensing agreement grants the owner of XMTS the right to exploit the material on this site in any way he wants, without having to compensate the author of that material in any way, whatsoever. Nowhere does it state that if the owner of the XMTS site exploits the material covered by the license that he has to credit the original author-- indeed, it would seem that the site owner could "publish", in the broadest sense of the word, the work of the author and assume the copyright of that work in his name, not the original author's name.

The agreement also gives the author the right to exploit the material he has created and posted on the site in any manner he may want. The difficulty being, in the instance of commercially valuable material, that very few "publishers" are going to be willing to invest in bringing the material to the public knowing that there is another commercial entity (the owner of the site) waiting in the wings to execute their freehold on the property and publish a virtually identical work.

This has already happened in the area of science fiction and fantasy. A fairly well known author wrote a series of inter-related short stories for a privately owned web site. Later, she decided to publish these in anthology form. Her usual publisher was approached and he thought it was a good idea. Unfortunately, the web site owner had previously cut a deal with a different publisher to publish the stories as a novel. She did this by creating some new material and carefully editing the short stories into a seamless narrative.

So, is this likely to happen on X MARKS THE SCOT? Probably not-- the site owner, Steve Ashton, is an honest and honorable man. But, if you are concerned about the possibility of of being "ripped off", then you have two obvious choices:

    1) Notify the site owner of your concerns and come to an agreement over how he may, or may not, exploit your work beyond the electronic medium of this site.

    2) Don't post anything you don't want to appear elsewhere in some other form.

That makes sense. I would worry more about any future publisher rejecting a work because it had been posted on a web site...
