    Pte. Godfrey, Dad's Army

For any other fans of Dad's Army, I found this very interesting and moving article about the real-life exploits of "Pte. Godfrey" -- not only the Somme, but also Dunkirk!

    Lest we forget!

Thanks for the link. I hadn't heard that name in some time and it was a pleasure to read about the man himself. We sometimes fail to remember that old men were once young, and some of them served bravely and honorably.

I winced when it said he deflected the bayonet into his groin, and only relaxed when I realised he had still had children afterwards!

Mainwaring: We'll all be beside you Jonesey. We'll stick together, you can rely on that. If anybody tries to take our homes and freedom away from us, they'll find out what we can do. We'll fight. And we're not alone, there are thousands of us all over England.

    Frazer: And Scotland!

Mainwaring: And Scotland. All over Great Britain in fact. Men who'll stand together when their country needs them.

Do you remember the episode where Capt. Mainwaring piped for the officer's mess? Or when Frazer recited an "updated version" of Scots Wha Hae for the American colonel in the Pub? (Welcome, Buddy!)

The best line is still..."Don't tell him, Pike!"

    We're a' doomed!

Thank-you for that very important story. We do indeed need to remember that the old men and women that we see have been through so much for all of us. May we NEVER FORGET
