    "Queen Victoria's Highlanders" (Osprey)?

I'm considering checking out Queen Victoria's Highlanders, by Gerry Embleton and Stuart Reid (Osprey, 2007), from the library. The book blerb says it discusses the tartan uniforms of the Highlander regiments, along with everything else. I'm just not sure if that means there are pictures, which won't help me much, or if the tartans and uniforms, hopefully kilts, are written about in detail.

    Has anyone read this book?

I haven't read this one yet, Ted. But if its from the Men-At-Arms series then its a brief overview on the given suject. It will touch upon the uniform, unit(s) history, etc. It will have quite a number of B&W photos and colour plates as well, with descriptions of the plates. It may be worth your while. This if its a Man-At-Arms or Elite Units book. Otherwise someone else will have to describe it for you.

Thanks, Terry. It does appear to be a Men-at-Arms series book.

This is a book in Osprey's Man at Arms series. It's mostly photos and illustrations of the uniforms, insignia, and equipment worn by the Highlanders in British Army during the reign of Queen Victoria. The text provides general description information but not much in the way of detail.

This series usually provide a basic visual reference on uniforms and insignia but for detailed information you have to go elsewhere.

I own it. As Sir William said, it's a basic primer on the subject; for a more detailed look at Victorian-era Highland squaddies, I recommend Diana Henderson's Highland Soldier.

I own it as well, and Todd is spot on. This book is definitely "a basic primer on the subject." The illustrations are a bit odd, but the information presented is informative nonetheless.

    Cheers,

Thanks, all, I appreciate your reviews and suggestions..
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to read it; can't say I know much about the subject, so starting with a basic primer might be good.

I've been reading on the book between other things. The pictures do have some details explained in captions, or at least things being pointed out. There's a chronology at the beginning; sometimes that can help a lot for me.

Anyway, so far, so good as a basic introduction.

In this opinion, Osprey Military books are well worth the investment (as an owner of quite a number). They provide adult primer-style information, high quality painted artwork, some excellent photos, drawings, maps and often, a useful bibliography.

It usually feels like I'm really far behind everyone in the history discussions, especially if I post something. Just trying to read up on stuff to know what's being discussed.
