The question I've never heard before
Sunday, the wife and I cruised on down to the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Md. The sun was out and so were the tourists. Several people made favorable comments on the kilt. Several kids laughed. One got smacked by his momma. But the best question of the day was......."Do you speak English?". When I answered yes, the woman was very embarrassed and turned and walked away.

I really can't imagine what she was thinking.

For devilment, you should have shrugged your shoulders and looked confused, to see what you did !

I love it! That's even better than the drunk that hollared at me, "Hey Switzerland!!"

The weirdest thing ever said to me was by a young lady who really liked the kilt and she said "You must be German"! I had to control myself from laughing and after a moment let her know that it was associated with the Scottish. Still cracks me up to this day to think about it.

I remember in 1987 or 88 I was with friends in a London disco/night club in Shaftesbury Ave after a company bash and was wearing my kilt/evening wear etc – the only person there so dressed. While I was getting a round in at the bar, a Sam Fox type blonde lady in a red spray-on dress sidled up to me and started talking about Ireland.
Easy mistake to make !

You should have said, "No. I'm an Amercian. I only speak American. I've never even been to England."

I'm not surprised, in a poll you had in the USA a while back some of you thought London was a country, I kidd you not

I love playing the english-speaking card when in Europe. Especially in Germany, even though my German is passable. I like to respond with "Awfully sorry Old Boy, mein Duestch ist sch**ss!" It almost always gets a laugh from whomever is talking to me.
I've also had the urban mythical old American lady ask me where I'm from (I'm from Wales, ma'am) and compliment me on my very good english! (Happened in Feb 2004 whilst on a snowboarding trip in New Hampshire).
