The Question jumps the garment line
Oddly enough, I have never been asked 'The Question' while kilted. Being female, I thought that people would realize such a question was inappropriate.
Then, a couple of weeks ago, I got the green light to wear kimonos full time at work.
For a garment that's famous for the sheer number of layers, I've been astonished by the number of people who ask what I'm wearing under the kimono.
I don't have a snappy comeback yet. Double entendres about pipes don't come out right for kimono.

Very beautiful. But why would you have to have permission to wear a kimono? Would you need permission to wear a sari or pants?

I always found that if a lady wanted me to know what she was wearing under anything then I didn't need to ask. I can't believe people having the cheek to ask that instead of just admiring a beautiful garment.

Is this convergent evolution? Kilts and kimonos are what I am making at the moment - with a couple hakamas languishing in need of finishing off.
I like the untailored garments - English smocks, saris, sarongs, cloaks, capes, togas, tunics, sarapes, ponchos and the like, but the last few years have seen a distinct reduction in non kiltlike sewing.
I have done a couple of kimonos, and now I am sewing something that is somewhere between a great kilt and a kimono.
Of course the kimono like the kilt is worn wrapped left over right - except for corpses...
That apricot is a lovely colour for you, the lemon compliments it very well - and the obi is very striking - a very sucessful outfit, I think.
I presume to dictate to no man what he shall eat or drink or wherewithal he shall be clothed."

under the Kimono
You could always say under the Kimono is where I keep my mini-Samurai sword, and nunchucks.
