Raising Sheep
I have done a lot of research on the whole subject and have come to realize it is soooooooooo much work. However, I did discover there were quite a few business' around these parts who raise multitudes of sheep. I was wondering, does anyone on xmarks live around these parts and raise sheep? Hobbie, commercial, doesnt matter.
Also, please feel free to post if you raise sheep period, no matter how far and wide you may be! And give a little information on things you have learned, techniques, etc. Thanks!
Slainte,
Zach

I know Jock had sheep, but I don't think he liked them very much. He will probably reply to this thread when he gets a chance.
When I was growing up, the cow folk were always complaining about the sheep folk, saying the sheep ruined the graze land. Other than that, I really don't know much.
Good luck.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

I'm laughing quietly over Jock's comments. Bear in mind that my limited experience is with pigs, but some general principles apply to all.
It's work and takes up a lot more of your time and resources than you expect. It's never a part-time job.
I once met a fella who had a place in Michigan and had a small herd of some kind of black faced sheep and they were more of a conversation piece than anything else...he had the neighboring farmer, who had experience, on the payroll taking care of them. It got old fast and I heard that the guy sold 'em off a year into the project.

My grandfather raised sheep, my father raised sheep, I did as well till my early 20s. I am sure the game is quite different in Ky with several hundred rather than out west with several thousand, but we managed. I buy a couple of locally raised lamb for the freezer every year. But I probably would not get back into production, winter lambing is too much work for this old man
