Reminder: Sunday, July 1, 2012 - 230th Anniversary of Repeal of Proscription.

After the Battle of Culloden, King George II and Parliament banned the wearing of "Highland clothes (that is to say) the Plaid, Philabeg, or little kilt, trowes, Shoulder-Belts, or any part whatever of what peculiarly belongs to the Highland Garb; and that no tartan or party-coloured plaid or stuff shall be used for Great coats or upper coats...".

Punishment was pretty extreme - with a second offense netting the offender being "transported to any of His Majesty's plantations beyond the seas, there to remain for the space of seven years."

Fortunately, on July 1, 1782, King George III repealed the The Act of Proscription of the Highland Garb: "That so much of the Acts above-mentioned, or any other Act or Acts of Parliament, as restrains the Use of the Highland Dress, be, and the same are hereby repealed."

In honor of this, we should all wear our "Highland Garb" on this anniversary. I will be wearing a kilt to church on Sunday, July 1, 2012. This will be the first time I've worn anything other than "western-style" clothing so should be great fun !. My "history lesson" is prepared -- in various flavors to suit the asker.

What say Ye Rabble - will you be wearing the Highland Garb on this anniversary?

In Canada, July 1st is out Celebration of Nationhood. There'll be Pipe Bands and Kilts "Ad Mare Usque A Mare" ("From the Sea all the way to the Sea"-national motto). I'll make sure the importance of the Right to Dress as we Wish (pantless) is known
