RRoS comes to upstate New York!!!

So there I was two days ago...or was it yesterday...the days are all running together lately since I've been working 11-13 hour days for 9 days straight...

My Division is currently conducting a major training exercise that involves several NATO countries. I was walking into the training center the other day and saw a British Soldier (Officer I'm pretty certain) seated and talking to another Soldier or civilian...don't remember which. The reason I don't remember is because I noted the tam sitting on the table next to him and remember thinking "that looks an awful lot like a RRoS Tam-o-Shanter...is he with the regiment...what else would tell me...oh...look for the patch on his right sleeve..."

Sure enough...there on his right sleeve was a Saltire with a Lion Rampant. I was in a hurry and didn't want to interrupt his meeting anyways...but I'm definitely looking to say hello if I get the chance. By the black hackle, I'm assuming he must be assigned to the Royal Scots Borders (1SCOTS). Pretty sure he's a Major or Lt. Col...but I was so fixated on the tam that I didn't think to get a good look!

I figured something big was going on, Jeff , because there has been more military air activity than usual in our area the last couple days and they've been flying low enough to trim the trees as well.

Coincidentally, my dad (step-father) passed away two days ago. He had a great day Monday and he just didn't wake up Tuesday morning. He looked so peaceful - as if he felt no discomfort at all - just like he was still asleep. An easy death for a wonderful man.

Anyway, he was a medic in the Air Force in the 50s and has been fascinated by planes ever since. As the family has been gathered at our parents' home we have been flown over by two c-130s and a formation of Chinooks almost as if it was a deliberate flyover. I know NATO didn't plan it that way, but he would have loved it.

    Regards,

    Brian

    Brian,
I'm glad that we could oblige...it wasn't NATO I don't think...just US. Please allow me to extend my condolences to your and your family. It is good to hear that he was at peace and had a good end to what I'm sure was a wonderful life. I salute him, and your family, for his service!!

This exercise has nothing to do with Soldiers, planes and tanks (it's all a computer simulation and a bunch of staff work while fighting a semi-fictional war), so I'm afraid I can't answer for a surge in military activity as of late...perhaps some Army Reserve or National Guard units doing summer training...or just the normal course of 10th Mountain Division training.

We should get together sometime for dinner and drinks since we live so close...maybe someday soon things will slow down for me!
