Salvation Army/Goodwill Day
I just had a crazy idea.
Since a lot of folks here visit Salvation Army Stores and Goodwill Stores (these are stores that sell second hand stuff- clothes, appliances, that people donate and help employ people in need) and every now and then find a treasure in the form of a tweed or a sport jacket that can converted...
Well, wouldn't it then be fun if Xmarkers set a date, just like a kilt night, to go visit your local Goodwill or SA store and see what "treasure" you can find, say a pin or a jacket, that you can convert or use for your kilt wearing addiction. Every where in the USA and elsewhere in the world, all at the same time (give or take).
And then post a picture of your newfound "treasure" in this thread.
Anybody interested? Perhaps, one of these Saturdays? Xmarkers descending upon the SA/Goodwill stores in one day, the same day for everybody...
Get something for yourself and help others in the process...

Interesting idea. Alas, no Sally-ann in Japan.. (Hey! That rhymes!) Anyway, the second-hand shops here are usually more expensive than the new shops. All the kids (and by kids I mean teens) think it's cool to look "American" so they hit the used clothes stores in force, which are stocked with size "S" and "M" Goodwill trash of the worst kind.
<shudder>
Really is a cool idea though.

Japan is such a country of contrasts! I think when they do something, they do it to the max...

Hang on - have I understood that correctly - secondhand stuff from the US, in smaller sizes - is transported to Japan to be sold to 'wannabee' teens?
That is - weird - I think weird is what I am getting - mightily strange at least.

Mein
That is a great idea, and yes Japan does seem a bit strange, but then how strange do we seem to them I wonder?

Mein,
Fun idea! Heck, any excuse to going looking for treasures in thrift shop is a good one.

Might be a good time to also show generosity in dropping off all those unneeded trousers, too.
Or whatever else you have in your closets.
Regards,
Rex.
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

I beat you to the punch. Yesterday, after reading this post (but not the part about dropping trousers) I went to the Salvation Army store and found a really nice tweed jacket which I'm going to hace cut down to wear with my kilt. It's a "Deansgate" brand, from S & K Menswear. I got it for $5.
It doesn't really match my modern Lockhart, but there's a light blue stripte in it which will perfectly complement my Carolina (when I get it).

Good idea, as I am a regular at the Salvation Army store near me. There is one a few towns away that I frequent as well. Around here, the men's section in Salvation Army is larger than the whole Goodwill store so I usually stick with the Army. I'd say 90% of my clothes are thrift store. Just can't spend full price anymore. Anyone within vicinity of the Whitehall or Quakertown PA stores that would like to tutor in how to work that sewing machine contraption, I'd be up for a trip.
And a tip... if you want to put together a day to do this, I'd suggest looking into when their family day is. Around here, it's Wednesday. Everything is 50% off. I got myself a nice Guinness t-shirt for $.50 the other day, cable knit sweater for $2.00. NEVER seen any kilts though....
