Scottish Culture's ra bhoy !
Who’d have thought it ? Out here in the sultry climes of Arabia (well it is raining a bit now), I found Scottish culture in this unlikely place. Yes, on Thursday in the depths of an exotic DVD store populated with Hollywood, Bollywood and Arabic tales of greatness past, I found a corner of Scotland, a sole true cairngorm gem amongst a heap of tax-free 22 ct gold bracelets and knuckle-duster-sized rings. So, eagle-eyed and swifter than Mehmet my Hawk, I scooped up the DVD collection (all 8 vintage and classic series) of Scotland’s greatest modern philosopher and bon raconteur – Glesga’s own Rab C. Nesbitt. Ah'm telling you bhoy, there’s no’ a drap o’ keech in it and it’s magic, so it is ! See me ? - See me ? - Ah'm scum !
As Rab's elder son replied to a hoyty-toyty Kelvinside-type woman who had chastised him, the boy said “Why no’ pit a crack in yer face and mek yer erse jealous ?”
Ony o' yous heard o' hum owerra watter ?

Aw, I miss Rab. I don't think there's even a chance of it getting shown over here. I keep meaning to find a few episodes for my wife to watch and see into my childhood a bit.

I watched Rab C religiously before I moved to Paisley. He was my equivalent of scottish Linguaphone lessons.

That was the one where they all went on holiday to a ramshackle bothy in the country. I don't think their kilts would meet much approval here. Try this for size - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVNI-9T8XIc&NR=1 - and don't forget to watch episode 1 either!

Wow - one of the girls on the boat is Ashley Jensen, who now stars in the American comedy shows "Ugly Betty" and "Accidentally on Purpose". I had to look up her IMDB profile to be sure, and yep, she did two episodes on that show in 1992-1993.
