    Scouters advice

Any of you scouters ever run a Highland games type weekend for your scouts? I proposed it to the PLC and they thought it sounded fun something different to do. The campground has a axe throwing range that will will include. I was thinking of using the cardboard rolls from carpet as Cabor toss but probably want three or four more events. My troop has a good mix of ages and abilities so whatever throwing event would need to be scaled somewhat. I was going to award bonus points to boys who wear some form of kilt for the events. Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Having organised outside birthday parties for boys, they like the brawny aspect of 'putting the shot' with the weight and size of the shot graded by either age or height. No whirling around, just side step up to the line and heave, so as to preserve life and limb, and skulls too.

Something with a little more hand eye coordination required is bean bag tossing - small pouches filled with dried beans or pea gravel and a range of hoops or tubs set at different distances with numbers, the further away from the peg the higher the number. Six goes, and add up the score, can be a team game or knockout rounds. One variation BP would have approved of, three thrown right handed three thrown left.

The "Wellie toss" might go over pretty well. Take a rubber boot and toss it backwards over the shoulder for distance.

Run the kilted mile for those that are interested. All participants must wear a kilt.

Look through the Troop Program Features and see if there are some games that might be adapted and/or given 'Scottish' names.

My council runs a council level Highland games/camporee every November. Bigger budget and support staff than for your troop, but the same general idea. Ann and John have provided great ideas that lend themselves to a smaller venue.
I agree each participant should wear a kilt. Either their own or one provided. Several years ago one of our scout mom's sewed about 200 faux great kilts (3-5 yds each of cotton/blend [read inexpensive] tartan cloth, hemmed) for the scouts to use with their own belts. Since the numbers now are around 500 we've added to the collection and the participants love it! It is quite something to see.
    Good luck

Thanks for the ideas folks the ideas have grown talking to pack master of one of our local packs his older boys in the troop he loves the idea. He's a Welsh and occasional kilt wearer and my upcoming Woodbadge buddy. We are currently talking about combining it with the crossover of his Webelos into the troop. They could spend the day with the scouts participating then the troop welcomes them into the brotherhood. We were already talking about doing a mutual camp so this just adds program to the event.

We had a Scout Highland Games a few years ago. We had two "real" kilts present (I was one), with most of the Scouts wearing a makeshift kilt out of cheap cotton tartan or check fabric, usually wrapped around their waist like a towel without any pleating, and almost all just wore it over their shorts or pants.

For a caber, someone found some carpet tubes about 8' long. For a sheaf toss, we used a pillow thrown with both hands.
