Smile In Search of God and Guinness

Is the name of a very interesting book I just picked up. I am only a few chapters in but I am fascinated by not only the importance of beer in a historical context but the uplifting nature of the Guinness story itself. The faith, generosity, and philanthropic works of the early Guinness family is warming to my heart and tells the tale of a company and a family that used their notoriety and great wealth to give more back than a check and a photo op unlike most companies of today. Last night I felt so connected to the story that I curled up with the book and a glass of Guinness and felt, tasted, and smelled the story I was reading. In this day of corporate greed and political pandering it is wonderful to read about a company giving above and beyond to the well being of those around them. I don't know what the company is like today but they began in faith and feeling and it is a good read.

These days the Guinness family still, I think, own the majority share holding of the brewery, but Diageo Plc are also major share holders.

I know the great great grandson of Arthur Guinness. His wife wrote a book on the story if the one you are reading has whet your appetite:

I'm afraid I haven't read it.... my pile of books to read is too high.
