VoIP, Yes or no, and who to use
I pose this question to the rabble. The Mrs. and I are tired of getting jacked with the various monthly bills from a couple of phone companies, and have been looking into the VoIP alternative. For those that have the service, are you happy with the service, price, sound quality, etc? Less land line phone bills would make it easier to purchase that second kilt!

This may not help you very much at all but our college moved to VoIP last July. The sound quality is stunning and the institution is saving an absolute bundle. Unfortunately that won't help you decide on a vendor...
Good Luck!

Since everyone in my household has a cell phone, we kind of thought it was futile to have a land line.

My local ISP is who I have mine through. Most days it is great, but I have had router issues and strange disconnects. Also keep in mind that if the power goes out, unless you have a good battery backup, you lose your phone.

We use InPhonex and i'm reasonably happy with service. The odd time I get a call that is murky, but a redial seems to fix things. Can't beat the price for toll free throughout North America.

I use Voip for my business line because it is cheap. I pay less than $10/month for unlimited local calls and caller id. I am satisfy with the service as I am on the phone half of the day. It is a good alternative for anyone.
When I started my business, I have no desire in using a land line company because it is not cost effective. I can also take the phone with me on client's sit. I simply switch to the softphone. I can be anywhere in the world and still make a local phone call to my clients.
The company I use is called Peopleline and they provide local phone services in Vancouver.

Ask about the 911 service. I have hear that people with VoIP phone service have had trouble with 911.

I have used Vonage for a couple of years. Including the extended trip to India where I maintained a US phone number with no issue. 911 is always an issue with these systems, but if you know that is the case going in, it should not be a problem

Thanks for the replies. I keep seeing the Vonage ads on TV, but going online to check the options and feedback they have quite a few negatives. And the 911 does seem spotty at best. I have a company trade out cell phone that doesn't cost me penny one, but as I have a housefull of family, that would only work if I was single.

Hmmm....NICC is a pretty big business, so you must be happy. I guess if institutions that size are going with it, it must be here to stay. Unless, as I predicted years ago, that the internet is just another fad
