What to do in Chicago over Thanksgiving?
Looks like I'm going to be in Chicago over Thanksgiving. Not that I'm complaining mind you, but I don't like the prospect of sitting around my hotel room with nothing to do for a whole day. Anything open on Thanksgiving?
-been to the Navy Pier, Field Museum and Sears Tower a few years ago...

Well...tough call...I'm not sure what's still going to be open on the day.
Fer sure the real and traditional State Street Parade is on starting at Eight AM.

Looks like the weather is going to be relatively pleasant so it might not be such an ordeal as it has been in the past. I'm laughing because I see that they're selling some kind of "premium" ticket for this now...anything to make a buck...how sad.
Other than that I totally recommend the Art Institute if it's open...aach...a quick check of their website shows that they'll be closed Thanksgiving...
If the weather is cooperative, you'll be able to check out Millennium Park...it's hard for them to close that for the holiday.
Don't know if the Duke of Perth is open but it is a great place for lunch...if you're downtown, it's basically taking one bus up Clark Street and then coming back the same way. I'll call 'em later and ask and post the answer.
Also not sure if Lincoln Park Zoo is officially open that day...that's kind of the same transportation deal as going from the Loop to the Duke. A quick look at the website for the Lincoln Park Conservatory shows that it's open Thurday...that's connected to the Zoo so ya' might have a winner there. Conservatory is very nice and I always look at it as a twenty or thirty minute stroll with free oxygen provided by the plants.
I am, of course, assuming that you are cast in the same sturdy mold as the rest of us hearty kilt wearing types and that a healthy perambulation on a brisk day is an invigorating pastime.
I'm doing the family thing myself, otherwise I'd be happy to meet you for a cup of tea or whatnot...I always love to show the city off. Bummer that the one day you have is a holiday and so much is closed.

I'm in Northbrook for Monday and Tuesday moving to a hotel near Water Tower Place until my flight leaves around noon on Friday.

I note that one of the Lettuce Entertain You restaurants that I can personally vouch for, Mity Nice, is gonna be open with a buffet thing going on Thanksgiving Day...just in case you're at loose ends for eats. This one is actually IN Water Tower Place.

...if you go and are in an interesting beer mood, see if they still have the Great Lakes Porter.

Dixicat, if you were in my part of Georgia, you would sure be welcome to join us for turkey. That would be a treat for us. Have safe and fun travels. Tyger

Awww, thanks! Wish that I was.
Well, I know one thing that I'll be thankful for tomorrow: not being in Nova Scotia to shovel all the snow that they're getting today.

I'm living "Deep in tha heart o Texas" and we have no winter down har, I am a thinking Chicago does and is now?
There should be a number of constructive things you could do rather than just sit around doing nitz in a hotel room, and if nothing else take time to sit down and spend some time conversing with God and reading your Gideon's Bible.
Could you not take a walk outside or around the hotel and simply wish every one you see "Happy Thanksgiving"? Or contemplate what all you are thankful for and thankful for not having?
